Sorry to hear about your freind. That's the problem with moose that MikeD74T alluded to. The moose stand so tall that the car hits the legs leaving the body to roll up the hood and through the windshield. Add the dark color, non-reflective eyes, sheer size and lack of fear of humans or cars and you get a very bad accident.
In northern NH there are signs saying "Brake for Moose - it could save your life" and they arn't kidding.

Two of my uncles in Brithish Columbia hit a moose while driving in a car together. It's legs went right between them in the fron seat. No telling what would have happened if it was a little over to either side.
It's extremely rare to see deer along the roads in my part of East Texas. Too many rednecks who consider roadways public hunting land. Road kill is also picked up before it gets cold when it does happen, but most road kill around here is wild hogs. Had a large one on the side of my road for just over a day until somebody took it home. The real funny part was all the trucks that stoped to look at it, but when they saw me watching them, they drove off. Otherwise I'm sure it would have been gone within hours.

On a rainy night they blend into the darkness; the only giveaway is the gray around their hindquarters. That'sone advantage to a pickup; they sit high enough so that the bumper and hood slow them down before they hit the windshield. I hit 3 with one truck; two the same night, about an hour apart. Luckily each time I was able to get slowed down first.
I also had a near miss on my MC; I hit the brakes when it came out of the ditch in te fog, but realised we were on a collision course so I twisted the throttle. I still swear she lifted her head so that I could get under it; had it been a bull with a rack I wouldn't be telling about it.

i got some active (ie connected to the battery, sending out an active audio signal) deer warning dohickeys a few years ago and i haven't hit a deer yet!!
