Killer turkeys

There was some discussion in the thread about city folk visiting the neighbors about wild turkeys being thought dangerous by urban folk. I mentioned that I have a flock that visits me daily but, I think they may be probing for weaknesses so they can attack me in my sleep. Yesterday morning, I was sitting inside minding my own business when I heard what sounded like a bowling ball on my roof. I stepped outside to see what it was and a couple of the flock were up there. I realized this morning that the surveillance cameras probably caught the action so I pulled off the video - Bernie Granier - I heard something on the roof yesterday... | Facebook.

I guess there might be something to the fear of wild turkeys after all...

We have a "bumper crop" this year...perfect conditions for breeding and hatching and overall great conditions for survival of the poults. The grasshoppers showed up late this year for some reason but they are here now and every road-side ditch around here is full of turkeys picking up hoppers (the hens and young are pretty lazy and will choose a fire trail or road over nasty cover).

Our wild turkey have avoided my yard for many years - happy days. Neighbors fed them for a while and weren't so lucky. The turkeys ruined their yard by scratching, digging & rooting. Their yard looks like a war zone. When they quit feeding - the turkeys started digging. One of these days the neighbor may
quit liking and start shooting.

I think the turkeys know that I have a large freezer - just waiting.

I bulldozed an acre up in the woods behind my house,,, it was kinda rough after the dozer was done.
I tried to grade it with my tractor, that made it better, but, still too rough to mow, if I ever got grass to grow.

Then, I spread grass seed, and I wanted to rake it in.
The idea struck!! Throw out cracked corn!!
I spread about 50 pounds of cracked corn with a fertilizer spreader.

The turkeys went crazy over the next few days,,, they "raked" the clearing looking for corn, but, never bothered the grass seed.
I ended up with a mow-able clearing.

The $6 worth of corn was a great investment!!

We named the clearing Turkey Point,,, in honor of all the work the turkeys did,,, :laughing:

Poultry are really good at bed prep. I put my chickens in the garden when it's done for the year and let them clean up, till and fertilize.

we raise midget white turkeys pretty much free range. if the screen door were open the would come in and set on the couch they are real friendly. the auto close on the screen is nessessary at my house.

How convenient...what with Thanksgiving right around the corner. You need to start fattening them up for the holiday.

That's not what the "Urban folk" are talking about around here. What they are talking about is the now-routine presence of Great White sharks off Cape Cod. The movie Jaws was filmed on Martha's Vineyard in the 70's: now it's real. Last week one was spotted four feet from shore.

A moose with an attitude certainly gets your attention but that is nothing compared to the feeling being in the water where you can swim 2 or 3 mph and there's a one ton critter in the water that you can't hear, can barely see, and can swim 25mph. So far, at least, there aren't any confirmed sightings in the Gulf Of Maine (inside of Cape Cod and North).

I have a dog, she's in a fenced yard. The turkeys have learned she can't get to them and she's realized they aren't scared of here anymore so she doesn't bark and they don't run. Thus far, they've stayed out of the yard.

It would be almost like killing a pet at this point. When you see them "run" to the tree/trailer is when I walked outside and they saw me. The 2 on the roof stayed there for a few seconds before taking off. They'll walk to within 20' of me if I'm already outside when they show up, not much sport in that.

I really enjoy watching them so I'll probably leave them be. It took me 3 years to get them to stay on my place with any regularity, I'd hate to run them off.

Most hunters only salvage the breast meat so a 25 lb. tom might yield 5-6 lbs. of boneless breast meat. I keep the legs and thighs (but they are pretty tough and full of tendons and require a lot of work to get to "soup stock"). So on my hypothetical 25lb. Tom, maybe 7-8 lbs.?

My wife and I went for a drive last weekend, way up in the mountains, lots of back roads. We're going real slow, windows down for the dogs, and I see something running along side of the road. I slow down even more, and my wife says, I think someone's baby Emu got loose. I mean, this thing had a butt as wide as an axe handle, and it was tall. So, I speed up a little, and darn if it wasn't the biggest gobbler I've ever seen. It was huge, easily 35 plus pounds, and then it turned right, and gone in the woods. I didn't know turkeys got that big. I figure one of the local farmers has been feeding him along for the fall.

Pretty sure I would rather tickle a grizzlies behind with a feather than mess with one of those big sharks! At least on land I can have a small chance of running downhill or something. Can't run in the water worth a darn. :laughing:
