This stuff is unreal. The bamboo we have in Pa is almost indestructable. I burried it last year and this year its coming back up. How do i take it out before it spreads across my whole property. I tried with the round up, but it kept coming back. Any suggestions? or know of a more powerful product?
thanks in advance. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Atrazine liquid is cheap ($6 a bottle) and worth a try. It kills everything here in Florida. It is designed to spray on st augustine lawns in a light concentration and it kills everything except the grass. It WILL also kill the lawn if you mix it too strong. Don't ask me how I know. For bamboo, I would mix it about 4 times stronger than the label says and go for it.

I thought bamboo was technically a grass, though? Sure atrazine will work on it?

I have some bamboo here (Indiana). It seems like it gets stronger each time I cut it down. It also grows about an inch a day!

Please update the post if you find something that does kill it. I'm sick of it here. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif
Thank you.

Why do ya'll want to kill this bamboo??? Here's another thought. You know how you can kill grass in an instant by over-fertilizing it? I think I'd put a lot of powdered fertilizer around the bamboo, spray the leaves with straight ammonia, and follow-up by spraying the branches with molasses to attract little bugs. All those things are pretty cheap compared to herbicides.

If it doesn't work, my advice was at least worth what you paid for it. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Bamboo is a grass so round up should work. They sell some Roundup in a powdered form in a box of 5 packages, and each package makes 1 gallon. It is 73% and should kill bamboo.

use to be a product called "spike" I don't know if it's still on the market but it will kill bamboo.

Spike is still out there. Nearly $70 a can now around here. But be careful. Do not get it anywhere near any trees you might want to keep.
SPike also does wonders on blackberry brambles. I have kept blackberries off of my fencerows for several years now by applying Spike.

I heard if you cut the bamboo and pour some straight Round Up concentrate into the hollow of the stem it will kill it. The stuff is hard to get rid of though and will take several treatments as new shoots come up.

I have a pretty big area to spray, i hope i can keep it in check. It seems like its going to be an expensive spray job.
The bamboo, really isnt good for anything. Its not the kind you can make fishing poles from. You cant use it for plant stakes. It gets pretty high, but very hollow and weak when dried. Probably about a quarter (25cents) in size round. And the strange thing is that it has seeds in the fall, but it must also spread by rizomes. Its just a pain overall.
Ill check on the spike and others thanks for the info.
I heard that the bamboo doesnt like long needled pines. but that could just be an old wifes tale.
later all and thanks.

Did a google search and came up with the following.

The easiest way of erradicating bamboo is to use sodium clorate.
It's the only (and i mean only) chemical that kills it effectively.
Just spread the chemical (looks like sugar or salt) evenly around the growing area, so that it can be absorbed by the roots.
Like fertilizer.
Depending on the size of the area covered, between 100-300 gram is neccessary for one
"bamboo bunch".
Another way which uses less off the chemical, is to clearcut the bamboo first.
Then when it re-sprouts (and has a few leaves), mix sodium clorate at the rate of 100 gram per liter and spray all the green parts, including the leaf and stem of the new shots.
It might be neccessary to repeat this treatment once if it re-sprouts, but I have never had to have done this more than two times.
I have experience with these things as i'm an oil palm plantation owner in southern thailand.
In here, bamboo is mostly considered an unwanted plant.
Bye bye bamboo

I give about $15/100 for 1/2" X 6' stakes. Maybe you're trying to eradicate a goldmine. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Lol I wish i could use the bamboo for someting, this bamboo is very weak, and cracks and splinters easy. If i could use it for something i would harvest it each year, but it just dries out to a brown, cracked mess. Here its just a pain.

Have you checked with a local zoo? They will often buy bamboo for there critters.

Supposedly, Roundup will kill it. Use it in double normal concentration and use a grass whip to rough the bamboo leaves a bit before applying. Do it a couple times if it doesn't seem to have worked after a week or so. Be sure and apply it when there's at least about a half day of sunshine.

I clear cut mine with the bush hog, now it gets cut with the grass. After a while it starts to thin out, and the area I cut first it has just about stopped trying to grow.
