Eh, come on, that’s not necessary. There’s plenty of brains...... I cant stop my daughter for feeling sorry for a lost cat. She’s just a kid....

This is also my favorite trap to catch coons with. I can use it safely in my barn because cats and dogs will not mess with it. Coons are the only animal I know of that will stick their paws down in it to get the teaspoonful of tuna fish I bait it with. You must hook it up very securely so the coon does not escape with your trap. I had one hooked with a snap used on a horse lead and the coon broke the snap and stole my trap where he either died a slow painful death or chewed his leg off.

I have 3 kinds of live traps that the coon have escaped from. Only one I borrowed from a friend was escape proof but I have no photos of it. Once a coon escapes from a live trap he is usually too smart to go in one again.

I’ve though of using one of those traps to call up coyotes to get the trapped coon and shoot them both.

How about using a trapped coon to bring in a bobcat?

That’s a possibility too. But I don’t have the same concerns toward Bobcats as I do coyotes. Coons, feral hogs, coyotes are problems.

Bobcats, don’t cause me any problems. Possums I don’t harm. They are very beneficial.

How are they beneficial? After burying my favorite horse after she contracted "possum disease" and after spending a small fortune curing her son of "possum disease" possums are number 1 on my list to send to an early grave if found on my premises.

I know, it's not their fault they spread the disease, but without them we would not have that disease.

Not to mention all the ground nesting birds they clean out!

I read up on EPD in horses and it’s bad. I didn’t know about that. Don’t blame you for wanting to rid your place of possums. If they had caused me problems then I would do the same. I’ve never had any problems with possums and they are good scavengers and clean up a lot of dead animals. I’ve been told they eat ticks and some snakes as they are immune to most snake venom.

I wondered about the "beneficial" aspect of possums myself. They end up in my critter trap and go the same route as the coons.
They can ruin a lot of good cantaloupes As to Bobcats, I have never had a problem with them..........just see one now and then. I suppose there are some "beneficial" aspects to every living thing.....even some people I know.:laughing:

EPM is the disease most feared by the folks at the Morgan farm next door. Opossum is considered a 'definitive host' beyond the possible incidental inclusion of cats, dogs, and/or 'coons in the parasite's life cycle.

I heard a crack last week that turned out to be the taking of a possum just over the fence ... if 400 yd from the hay barn but 'on their list'. The shooter is <25 YO so he used his .450 Bushie AR. It wasn't a very long shot maybe 5yd, but at that age if you can only have one HG or one rifle it has to be a .45 or larger caliber.

If you've forgotten or never experienced how much fun the <.223/5.56 calibers are I suggest you revisit any that you have. I find they p__ off fewer neighbors considering their lethality to 100 yd on <50lb game. The downside of wanting to shoot undesirables is that only barn invaders deserve my wrath and suffer my disdain by being trapped therein. (I languish yet unfulfilled )

btw, IMO .17 HMR is only for head shots on a calm day. I found it to be poor at penetrating thick fur (some cats, most coons & 'possum), esp on a quartering vs ideal broadside shot. I found TNTs to surpass V-Max in penetration. CCI 20g 'Game Point' or don't bother with anything much > 20lb or more than 70 yd away.
