Killing raccoons (NC)

When we moved to our place, I thought we would have lots of raccoons. I have only seen one...

I was making beer one day in the winter, and after boiling the wort, I put it on the front porch to cool down. For those who don't know, wort is water with full of sugar/carbs that the yeast will soon turn into alcohol and CO2. It was day time and I went out on the porch to check the wort's temperature when I looked up and a raccoon was making a bee line for the five gallon bucket. Mr Raccoon was paying me no mind until I yelled. Rocky could smell those those carbs and wanted some! I can't remember if it was the same day or a different batch of beer, but an possum also went after the wort and almost climbed on the porch before I scared it off.

So, one could make a batch of beer, use it as possum or raccoon bait, and drink the beer afterwards.

Later,
Dan

Speaking of smelling carbs; my lab partner and I, during our college days, liked our beer, but being on a college budget, beer was almost out of the question...so we made our own home brew. My neighbor thought that was a good idea, and decided he would make some home brew also. To make a long story short, he thought putting the brew in a big Thermos type jug, and putting it up on the roof in the sun would speed things along. It did. Unfortunately he left for a day or two, and in the sun, the stuff bubbled over on the roof and down the side of the house. I could smell it a block away, even before I turned down my street. I'm surprised the revenooers didn't come from OKC and arrest him! :D

So we're going to set up tomorrow night and thin these guys out. I can use suppressed 22LR - does that make sense or not matter? Thinking with a 10/22 or .22 AR suppressed maybe get multiple ones at once since the group sizes are at least 6-8 I see on camera. But even that noise or seeing one of their buddies react to getting shot - are they going to scatter immediately anyway so may as well just use shotguns? Or are they so focused on eating might have some time they linger after first hits so quiet shots means more time before they start running?

Also, say there's a group of 6, we get 3 and 3 scatter. Do we stay set up or are the other 3 not coming back for a long time? Will bait with canned cat food.

Anyway, plan is to shoot however many we can, then leave 2 traps overnight to see if that gets a couple more.

In the 23 years at our current house, I've seen 1 raccoon on our 1+ acre. I drove up at 3:30am one night, parked the truck next to the trash can, and looked over to see the lid pop up and a raccoon look at me. Then just like Oscar the Grouch, he popped back down and closed the lid. I had something near the trash can that it used to climb up on. I removed that, and never saw them again. We hear them fighting in the woods behind us all the time, and I see them dead on the road almost weekly, yet only that 1 in 23 years. Why? No food source.

Our next door neighbor has had raccoons in their attic numerous times. Why? They put out bird food and easy access garbage cans.

That may work for you but I have pens full of pheasant worth $21 ea.Lost 25 to coons a week ago.Fixed the hole and set my traps and have caught 7 so far.I normally have an electric fence around my pens but haven't got it going yet.
Biggest problem is nobody hunts/traps raccoons anymore and the state does a Rabies bait drop so they don't get rabies. We have way too many;I get them all the time on my game cameras.

... you can thank the doo-gooders for that!! ..

Meh, just wait till they're done hugging a 'coon. Then you can shoot it and thank them for holding it until you got there.

Trapping went South a handful of years ago. Putin's pals sucked so much $$ out of the economy to buy property in Florida that consumer spending took a hit. Russian demand for furs dropped, and rather than $30-50 for prime coyote and 'coon pelts we've seen prices from $12-20 for five years or more.

The simplest way to deal with problematic animals that are smarter than you are is to shoot them...

Actually I have found a better way:. My 80+ year old neighbor seems to take care of most of the problem animals in the area. After he moved in, I hear some sporadic .22 semi auto fire occasionally and even at dusk/night, but the racoon population we had around here seems to be totally under control. I don't seem to have to mess with them any longer, as they just disappear.
