King Kutter spreader; decreasing the “spread”

Hello Kieth,

It is no wonder why your getting all that splatter as there is no shield at the front to stop it.
Your doing the right thing by putting that curtain across the rear of the tractor.

While I think a very low PTO speed is the answer, I believe the angle of the vanes (fins) on the metal cone spreaders can be angled back to reduce spreading width. Mine had adjustment holes in the flat plate on the bottom for that purpose.

The older Yanmars have multi-speed selector PTO capability. Bummer the new machines are not like this.

You could get a PTO reducer either mounted on the spreader or on the tractor.

They can even put the gear box on your implements too.

I was thinking the same possible solution. Or perhaps spreading only to one side (left or right) and hug the opposite side of your travel path.
I have a Cosmo manufactured similar unit. Attached is the operators manual that might be helpful. Check manual pages 18 & 19.

My spreader has a small front shield to minimize fertilizer from flying towards the tractor, but I get pellets raining down a little when the hopper get low and the agitator gets a-flopping. 😁

Looks like you are right.

I don't know anything about spreaders but what if you slit the end of the vanes where the vertical meets the upward and lower curves and bent the flap inward to deflect the throw. Or as an alternative you could fabricate an angled piece of metal to mount at the ends to act as a deflector. The latter is probably a better solution. Perhaps you could take some tubing, slit it open cut the excess out, bend the sides as needed and reshape the ends.

Hove you solved this and what solution did you go with?
