Ok im getting ready to purchase a new finish mower. My local Tractor Supply store carries King Kutter mowers. For those of you who own them, what do you think of them? Im going to buy a 6 footer to use with my TC29D. Oh and also, which do you prefer, side or rear discharge and what is the difference in cut quality? Thanks!

First, let me say that most of my implements are King Kutter but my finish mower is a Woods that I bought used. In my experience, King Kutter is a good value for the money you spend. I bought the Woods because it was a deal... one season old... looked better than new ones at the dealer... and less money than the new KK. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

My Woods is also a 6' rear discharge model. While I've never used a side discharge finish mower, I doubt the cut itself is any different. What will be different is the look of the lawn/field when you're finished if the grass you're cutting is at all long.

With the side discharge you're far more likely to have piles, clumping and windrowing of your clippings. With the rear discharge the clippings are distributed far more evenly out the rear of the mower. I think it makes for a nicer looking finished job and would highly recommend going with the rear discharge model.

Good luck with whatever you decide. I hope this helps. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Typhoon,

King Kutter is a good value. My Father-in-law currently has a 6 foot finish mower and it does a good job. They also have very good support and parts availability. I also bought a used King Kutter Rotary Mower several years ago. It was beat and now needs replaced. I am considering replacing it with a new King Kutter.

As for rear discharge, I used to have it on an old mower (woods I think) on a Farmall A, and now on my John Deere 790, I miss it.

Thanks for the responses guys. Gary, looks like you just talked me into the rear discharge. Just by the looks of the rear discharge mower, I kinda figured I would be leaning that way because of the way the clippings would be dispersed. And, from what im hearing, King Kutter sounds like a pretty solid brand. Parts easy to come by as well. I believe I have made my choice. I will probably pick it up after work today. I will make sure and post after a couple months of use to let everyone know how its holding up. The price tag on the 6 foot unit is 1162.00. Thanks!!

You're confused, crazy and mad?
Your life must be difficult on TBN because of all unhelpful posts that happen from time to time. Or, probably there is no another nomad on TBN. Anyway.

I guess this and they help. (see 3rd line in their first paragraph). Now, wondering if such a slogan is legal or illegal.

I did get a 6' rear discharge First Choice (no riddles here) mower for the price of a KingKutter (maybe less) a couple of years ago and think that it is a very well made item... The KK rear discharge units were lighter built and hard to find...
I do have a KK boxblade, rake, & carryall and Landpride blade that are adequate. The only items that where brand new at purchase were the mower and rake.

Everything Gary mentioned is right on the mark....as usual. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

I'd add one more advantage to the rear discharge deck over the side discharge. It allows you to mow in either direction alongside of obstacles, such as retaining walls, buildings or edging. Of course, you can do that with a side discharge deck too.......if you don't mind having the clippings thrown into your planting beds, on your sidewalks or driveway, or in your garden! /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

I am on my second season with a KK 6’ RFM (rear-discharge). A few issues with tight wheels and a couple of bad zerks but nothing I could not fix, overall a decent deck for the price. However the one thing is the quality of the blades. They do not hold an edge for very long at all. Now given that I do cut in some dusty areas, they should last longer between sharpening. And once a little dull, that deck clogs up thick. I want to find a better blade.

My rear discharge Bush Hog RFM didn't do a good job of dispersing the grass until I took off the chain guard across the back. Even then it did not do near the job of my neighbors' riding mowers with side discharge. A friend of mine that used to own a landscaping business said that is because the side discharge recuts the grass as it's being shuffled down to one end. He said you never see landscapers using a rear discharge anything.

FWIW. Nothing like making a decision harder than it already is. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

OK nomad, you DON'T care for First Choice, for whatever reason. I think by now we get it. Now, go hunt some truffles, if they're in season.

I'm on my 4th season with a King Kutter 6' RFM.(side discharge).
No problems at all so far.

I bought a 6' KK rfm this spring so far I'm happy with it. My neighbor has had one for a few years now and he still likes his. He did have a problem that I fixed up for him, and then changed mine to match. The chain and bracket broke that runs from the toplink to the rear of the deck that allows you to lift the rear of the deck completely off the ground It was 1/4" chain arc welded to a piece of 3/8"x1'' bar stock with some adjustment holes drilled in. The chain link snapped right at the weld. They should of seen that one coming. I just cleaned it up drilled a hole and bolted and double nutted 3/8" galvanized chain to both ends, then did my new one the same way.

Nomad,

I took a look at what you linked and, since First Choice is quoting a customer and not making a claim, I think they're OK legally. As to what I wrote, I'm guessing that those very thoughts were on the minds of many others who read what you posted.

As to the quote on the First Choice page, here's the ultimate irony for you. If you want to look back at my posts in the archives I'm sure you'll find more than one wherein I described the First Choice box blade I bought as "Woods/Landpride or better quality at a King Kutter price or less." I could actually be the customer who was quoted there. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif I'll have to give Pieter a call and find out.

As to your comment that my "life must be difficult on TBN" , while I appreciate your kind concern, let me assure you that I'm fine. Thank you.

As to your remark about there not being another Nomad on TBN, for that I am even more thankful.

Have a wonderful day! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Hey, Fellas I've seen this before ROFLMAO can someone kindly enlighten me since the one brain cell I have left is currently directing respitory functions,Thanks, OH BTW I have a well used 6'kk RFM , Its ok but does windrow unless the grass is plenty dry and forget about a nice job if the grass gets a little high because you can't get to it immediately. Also mine is a 1991 model and it has two side covers (rear discharge I suppose)I have to leave one of them off so the grass won't row too bad. My mower came with my tractor all was well used but keeps on keepin on /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gifI don't know if I would buy this brand or not? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif
