( ( Remember when TOYOTA was a "Piece of Jap crap!!??" Have you looked at a "LEXUS" lately?! ) I can't help remembering when Kubota was the Kioti of it's day, and people would say, "You're going to buy a what kind of tractor?" It's no different now, and Kioti will become a biggie and prices will be outrageous, and someone will say, "You're going to buy a what?, you should buy a Kioti, the resale is so much better, and the dealer network is better and the parts are better ad infinitum. When will they learn? Never I suppose. John )

Very well put John. It's just a matter of time. I see the pack on the horizon. They're coming! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: Kioti Isn\'t Worth the Risk

A question regarding Kioti..and hopefully you folks can answer it.

I heard that Kioti bought the blueprints from Kubota and built their own name brand in South Korea.

Is any of this true?

Thanks in advance for your input.

Re: Kioti Isn\'t Worth the Risk

As someone who has lived in Korea for 2 years and Japan for 1 year I can say your observation is understandable but would be very insulting to any Japanese or Korean. It's like saying aren't the Hatfields and McCoys actually related to each other. There's a lot of history between the two countries thats goes back hundreds of years. And none of it good.

The Korean Kioti company is taking away market share from Kubota and you can believe Kioti took aim at Kubota as their prime target. But can ya prove it, i think not. But ya can deface Kioti a little with a lawsuit. Will they win, nope, but thats not the point. As the years go by you will see different strategies being played out by the 2, I'm hope they start a price war.

Koreans and the Japanese copy anything and everything that is sucessfull and if they are sucessful at selling the item then they change it a little and call it their own.

And as for Daedong, it is one of or the largest company over there. Everywhere you look you see Daedong. Come to think of it I've never seen a toyota in korea or a hyundai in japan, lol.

Re: Kioti Isn\'t Worth the Risk

I don't know if it falls under urban legend or not - but I had heard that Kioti "collaborated" on some earlier model Kubotas and that the dies..design, and so forth were either copied or some such thing. I'm the wrong person to ask though since I never followed it very far... it didn't matter to me - either way they made a good product.

I believe that Kioti took all of the "old" dies that Kubota was no longer using due to being worn out and/or because of some design changes. That saved Kioti time and money. Kubota could do nothing about this and that is why there is so much animosity between them. That was how they started.

Re: Kioti Isn\'t Worth the Risk

The only thing the "name" means to me is that, if you have known about it for decades, and it has always meant "quality" and "value", then you will tend to give the name some value over a name you've never heard of. I don't know of a single Kioti tractor owner in my immediate area. First time I ever heard of it was when I was looking used 5 years ago and the seller of a Kioti said it was "made by Kubota". I did my research and found that to be false.

My impression of Kioti now is that they must be pretty dang good because all the Kioti owners on here like theirs. I probably wouldn't buy one though, unless it was about 30% less than a Kubota. If that makes me an idiot, then I'm guilty.

Re: Kioti Isn\'t Worth the Risk

( ( Suppose the Kubota is 17,000 and the Kioti is 14,000. After 5 years the Kubuta would probably still be worth 12,000, but I'll bet the Kioti wouldn't bring more than 11,000, if that.)

5 years:$17,000 minus $12,000 = $5,000
5 years:$14,000 minus $11,000 = $3,000

PRETTY SIMPLE MATH! You lost 5K as to 3K which in turn is 2K YOU DIDN'T LOSE FOR RESALE!!!!!!!! )

Obviously I had a typo in that ancient post. Can't get anything by you guys.....

Resale is not everything, but its something. Thats why I drive Suburbans and Pickups.

Re: Kioti Isn\'t Worth the Risk

I think the South Koreans are more than capable of designing a few simple dies! As I have pointed out on other posts, check out used gray market tractors. They all look pretty similar. It is only the last few years when any kind of "styling" has intruded into the design of CUTs, so the fact that older Kiotis and older Kubotas look similar is not too surprising. South Korea's heavy industry is really quite advanced - to think that they would have to resort to used punch dies for parts as simple as those on a CUT is silly. In reality, these things are pretty basic machines - the technology is in the design and manufacturing systems, well within South Korea's capability.
