I am building 1/3 of a 80x50-ish pole barn w/loft. I scavenged some big utitilty poles, 28' long & 14-15" on the butt end. A neighbor came over with a 16" auger & dug 5 holes(my auger is only a 9"). I would love to say that I tilted up & set these monster poles with my DK40SE, but I have a neighbor that is a logger, so he came over and set them with his log truck boom....took about 45min & much safer.

I will trim the poles later when the other 2/3's gets built, but I do want to be able to stand up in the loft against the wall. The section I am building now is going to be the 80'x16' drop shed(in red to the right of the poles in pic #1) which will hold about 320 rolls of 4x4 hay. I am using the Kioti & forks to load logs on my sawmill, then off load the finished boards & beams. I'll post more pic's as it gets done.

I was straightening each pole and tamping the bases with a 'baccer stick.

That's HUGE. Sounds like a great project, and one that should keep you busy for the rest of hte year.

I'm confused by what it means that you are building 1/3 of the barn? Who is building the other 2/3's?

What spacing are you putting the poles at?

Eddie, I am doing all of it...eventually. I went in halfsies with my neighbor on hay equipment. Neither one of us has enough barn/shed space to store the hay until we find a buyer. So, if you look at the first pic, for now I am only building the section in red off to the right of the main barn. Some call it a drop shed, & it will be 80' long, 16' wide. Later, after I get our house finished, I will set another row of big poles for th emain section of the barn, then do another 80x16' drop shed on the left side.
I haven't decided on how big(wide) to make the main section, I am thinking 20' so I have room to manuver a tractor inside easily. If I go 24' it also makes a good indoor riding area(and .22 gun range). I have learned the hard way...think BIG, or don't think at all!

Br, the poles are on 20' centers & there is 5 of them. Belive it or not finding the last 2 poles was very hard. I called every Utility Co between Bristol/Middlesboro(KY) & Knoxville....nada. I just happened upon a private company that has a contract to change out old/damaged poles & they give them away free.

The break in the winter weather the last couple of days has been great. I fired up the sawmill & milled some Poplar for the barn & a few cedar house logs.

That is good to hear. I will follow with earnest! A great project and it will be a swell place to accumulate all sorts of good stuff!

20' OC ... tell me more. What are you using for your top plate? What about Rafters?

I have a Woodmizer mill, so I can cut up to a 28" diameter log & out to 26'(I made my own extension for the mill). Anyway, for the top plate and rafters it will most likely be Poplar & a 5 or 6x10" -ish.
