My wife is interested in buying a Kitchenaid, architect series slide in range, KESS907SBL. The range is self cleaning, has a convection oven, has touch pads, a warming drawer, does bread proofing and dehydration, and does temperature sensor baking, plus other things. I know nothing about any of this.

Does anyone have any experience, good or bad, with this range? The reviews are all over the place, from one star to five stars.

Thanks for any info.

We have kitchenaid --- like it real well ...not that model. We have a gas stove top and a built in elect oven....2 years and not a bit of trouble and am quite pleased with both.

We have a 1999 vintage KitchenAid self-cleaning electric range, Model KESC307HBS4. It was here when we bought the house 7 years ago, but appeared to be new (prior owner was a single man). It has the convection cooking, but we just never got in the habit of using that feature. Anyway, it's been trouble free except for when I dropped a Pyrex measuring cup on it and broke the glass top.

We have a Kitchen Aid "Superba" double wall oven with convection and the bread proofing/dehydration features. We absolutely love the ovens. The bread proofing feature works well and can be very handy, but I have not tried the dehydration feature. Our ovens are 2004 or 2005 models and have given us no trouble.

Be careful of the the self cleaning feature on these ovens, not just Kitchen Aid, but all newer ovens. I've read that the excessive heat seems to cause a lot of trouble with circuit boards and internal thermal switches. We do not use the self cleaning feature and never have.

We also have a couple of Kitchen Aid dishwashers that have served us well. As a matter of fact, the only Kitchen Aid product that I have owned and would not recommend is the coffee maker. It is junk.

I take what CU says with a block of salt but I still use them for research.

I could not find the model number you mentioned on their website but the CU overall reliability rating for KitchenAid was a 14% for electric cook tops which was one of the higher problem rates. Hot Point was at 4% with Jennair at 16%. GE and WhirlPool were at 6%. I suspect the difference is in complexity. I doubt Hot Point has the bells and whistles of the KitchenAid.

Gas ranges were HotPoint at 7% and KitchenAid being worse at 16%.

We have a Maytag convection oven which we do use. Convection cooks faster and supposedly using less power. For bread making I just use a dutch oven or put water in the oven when baking.

Given how much money Momma wants to spend it might be worth buying a subscription to CU and looking at their ratings. Sometimes what they rate is important to me and sometimes not. Reliability is important but I think it has to be taken with a block of salt.

Later,
Dan

I'd sure agree about the block of salt; a truckload might be more what I'd think. Before you pay any attention at all to their "ratings" you have to read the entire report, and even then I'd be very cautious.
