when i beat mine with a sledge, i rapped it so hard the last couple times....it did pop off.......however, when i grabbed the input shaft and pinion with my hand, i couldn't turn it.......i thought i had screwed up and broke a tooth or something....

after i took it apart and inspected it, i couldn't find anything wrong......put her back together and she seems to be fine....

I know that you are not supposed to do this because you could damage the gears but I just beat directly in the shaft and mine popped right off. Still works fine.

on fwd cars with stuck axles, a air hammer with a pointy bit does wonders; thats what I would try, along with a acetline torch heating up the shaft.

After reading of this problem I think I'll attempt to remove said part from my 2 week old KK cutter while it is still new and slop it up with antisieze;) Then when the day comes that I have to remove it I'll be good....I hope:eek:

what about puting the nut back on but loose and bump pto in gear and out again.

I couldent get my rear wheels on my truck off and a mechanic friend said to loosen the lug nuts and drive around a littlei had to drive around the block and they were loose when i got home.

Thanks Rob, I have beat the stew out of it from the top without luck. No way to get a wrench on it and the impact will not take a bite on the loose bolts. I am still soaking it with PB Blaster and I値l give it another try today.

Thanks,
MarkV

I'd say you should put the nut back onto the stump jumper and forget it.

...now for the loose nuts on your gearbox. What I do is grab me a big set of visegrips and clamp down on the threaded part of the bolt sticking out of the nut. Then I put an adjustable wrench on the nut and tighten to my heart's content. Sure, I mess up the threads on the bolt, but who cares? If your bolts don't stick out of the nuts, you can't do this, but it has worked twice for me on two different cutters. I just did it about two weeks ago on my current one. :D

Thanks for the ideas I am still working on it as time allows. I think it is going to a friends shop where we have better access to tools and such. We are going to fab a puller of some type and see if that will do it. If not we will burn a hole in the stump jumper to access the bolt heads I need to get to. Once tight I have decided I will tack weld them so they can稚 come loose in the future.

Skyco you may have the right idea to pull yours while new. A friend had the same bolts on his gear box work loose and did not have trouble getting the stump jumper off but his was almost new like yours. Mine has sat in the weather for 4 years. Be sure to check those gear box bolts when you take off the stump jumper.

when i was working on it, i thought to myself, "if i ever buy a new one, the stumper jumper comes off before i use it.........good coat of never-seize"

My BIL has one that we took the nut off 3 years ago. The tractor is an L175 and I think the mower is just as old.

So much for my plan...tried to get it off this evening and no-go. Kroiled it, heated it and pried it to no avail. Oh well so much for my plan to remove it when new and anti-sieze it. I'm not gonna admit defeat yet, maybe when cooler weather hits I'll tackle it again, don't have a lot of patience, it's 91 deg right now and high humidity.

I think that spline shaft is just a cheap design. It seems all the bigger mowers I've worked on (they are older), have a tapered shaft with a key.

Did all the new ones, 5', 6', 7' go spline?
