If so, this is what I have and I hear no valve noise out of the command 18 it has in it.

Ear held above rocker covers with hood open will give the note of the rocker arms moving, a slight clack sound. In other words with a properly operating engine, you should have to make an effort to listen to valve train noise, if it is obvious over the other tones of the engine, there is something wrong.

GRB said:Turbo, I have a a 2550 w/ 22 hp and it purrs. I agree with you, there is something wrong. Could be a number of issues. I am also picky about my equipment and it would drive me crazy to have this problem. Since it has been torn down and "fixed" once and it still makes noise, it may be difficult to correct. I work for an automotive manufacturer and I only know about automotive dealers, but it seems your Cub dealer has been cooperative so far. With cars, the manufacturer puts pressure on dealers to keep warranty costs down so the dealer may have fixed it on his dime the first time. If you insist on a new engine or tractor and he balks, you may want to contact Cub direct. The manufacturer may push back on a dealer who wants to replace an engine under warranty, but will likely not give a customer with a brand new tractor too much grief.
