I assume you mean 1864 (there was no 1865 that I'm aware of).

If so, this is what I have and I hear no valve noise out of the command 18 it has in it.

Yes,....1864...my bad!

If you walk a few feet away from the tractor with the engine running, you should hear little but exhaust note from a Kohler Command. Ear held above rocker covers with hood open will give the note of the rocker arms moving, a slight clack sound. In other words with a properly operating engine, you should have to make an effort to listen to valve train noise, if it is obvious over the other tones of the engine, there is something wrong.

Its defiantly auditable over the exhaust no matter where I stand. Before I start mowing I always let the motor worm up while I top off the fuel and go in the house to fill my water bottle. When I come back out to start mowing, all I hear over the exhaust is that freek'in metallic lifter sound as I'm walking towards it (insert pist-off here). If I get up close to the block the lifter noise is pretty much dominating. Now granted, it does quite down a little after I spend 1.5+ hours mowing, but If I shut it down and let it sit for a few minutes (10 min top) while I clean off the tractor it will start rapping again as soon as I restart it....

I guess that it will go back foe service once the mowing season is over. I will probably give my dealer a heads up this week so that he can make arrangements well in advance.....The dealer has treated me very well thus far and that's why I kinda hate to be a ******** about this.....

You are only standing up for your rights under your warranty, and even as I think back during my time as a motorcycle mechanic at a Honda dealer, we never looked upon those with things they felt were not right with their machines as complainers or ??-

I am reminded of a car I had about 15 years ago, a Mitsubishi Galant, it was my first new car that did about an 80 mile round trip to and from work every day. It did not take it long to rack up miles, and at 50k miles, 10k before the recommended interval I took it to the dealer to have the timing belt replaced, which they did. (In retro I should have tackled it myself LOL) About 5k miles later the engine started sounding funny when started cold, and I took it back to same dealer and they could find nothing wrong. At 75k miles, the engine broke the replaced timing belt and bent all of its exhaust valves. One valve broke off and and it's stem lodged into a piston.

Of course I then had it towed to the dealer. Here came the grief- they tried to say the 60k mile powertrain warranty expired, no exceptions, and I was responsible for the repair costs. I had all my documentation that I maintained the car correctly and the belt had been replaced, and also a document stating I had the noise looked at. I ended up getting the repair covered, but the car sat at the dealer for over 4 months while the case and my possible litigation cleared through Mitsubishi and the dealer. What the F&^# good is a car or anything under warranty or not if you can't use it? It all came back to that base warranty, the owner's manual, and my documents which was my legal standing. But holy schneike what a PAIN!

Your Cub dealer can either spend the next however many years of your warranty messing with the engine trying to quiet it down, or spare the grief and just replace the engine which on those Cammands that retail at $1000-1200 are really only about $300-400 at actual dealer/manufacturer cost. To keep tearing the engine down and replacing stuff with the parts and labor costs will VERY quickly exceed the cost of a new engine. When working at the Honda dealer if I encountered the same ligitimate complaint with an engine 2 or 3 times that was not previously corrected to owner satisfation the engine was replaced. I suspect your Cub dealer will respond in the same manner, it will just make things easier for them.

Fordlords You say dealers price on command engines is $300-400 well if you can get them at that price I will buy some from you. Last time I bought one was tripple that!

Turbo, I have a a 2550 w/ 22 hp and it purrs. I agree with you, there is something wrong. Could be a number of issues. I am also picky about my equipment and it would drive me crazy to have this problem. Since it has been torn down and "fixed" once and it still makes noise, it may be difficult to correct. I work for an automotive manufacturer and I only know about automotive dealers, but it seems your Cub dealer has been cooperative so far. With cars, the manufacturer puts pressure on dealers to keep warranty costs down so the dealer may have fixed it on his dime the first time. If you insist on a new engine or tractor and he balks, you may want to contact Cub direct. The manufacturer may push back on a dealer who wants to replace an engine under warranty, but will likely not give a customer with a brand new tractor too much grief.

I've given that some thought already.....

Anybody got the customer service # Cub? I briefly looked on the CC web site, but found nothing....

Thanks
Troy

Hey Troy, the Ph# listed in the owner's manual for Cub is 877-282-8684. If it comes to this, I would ask if Cub has a parts/service rep that travels to dealers to resolve customer service issues. Most manufactures of this type of equipment do. Good luck.

Sorry to hear that. I mowed today...even tackled a 1/2 acre patch across a creek on back side of property my wife has been on me to mow all summer. Grass must have been 12 inces deep, 2550 ate it up...only problem was I came back to the house looking like I had been rolloing in it. Good luck with your problem.

Work at the dealer level first, then head for the heavy artillery only if necessary. My case with Mitsu almost became drawn into court, that is where they gave in. It is likely the dealer will get the problem fully resolved as the warranty is 100% in effect no questions about that. With the labor it would be less to swap out the engine with a new one rather than change out the cam (and lifters again) and replace the heads to stop the noise. And I honestly would not want an engine in a new machine that had to have that much mechanical work done to it outside the factory build. You also have Kohler themselves that can become involved if needed, so your weapons stash is very good. It sucks to have to deal with this, but the good part is the tractor is not a car you need all year round (unless you planned on snow moving) and once done with mowing the proper resolution can be reached over the winter.
