Someone will correct me if I am wrong, I think the steering clutches are running dry on the D20? Have you tried to adjust the linkage?--Ken Sweet

They are dry but I have not tried to adjust them yet. I noticed the problem one day when I got on it after it had set without being ran for about a month. After a few minutes of warm up it will steer fine with the exeption of reverse. If I pull the left stick while in reverse it sounds like I am pulling both sticks and the engine starts to lug.

I am also cheap and bought a 1972, 10,000lb, 45 HP diesel, International 500c doser with the 6-way and rippers. Same price but a little older. There are parts that are no longer available for this machine either. Unless you buy new, there is no guarantee on parts availability.

45 HP is plenty to push over some substantial trees 6-8" and bigger stumps depending on their level of decay. It will take more effort and time than with a D8 for sure. More power is better to be sure, but you have to use what you can afford and the d21 sized machine will do some work.

Do note that a small machine is not necessarily any cheaper to purchase than a large one. Look at Ebay for reference, this is where I bought my 500 and where i plan to sell it. The large machines can be much more expensive to ship.

Also, I have pulled both tracks off of my dozer and replaced a few rollers. I could not have done this alone with a D8.

zeke.
WHere is it leaking??

TSC does carry seal kits if its just the external seal. Or you might just take it to a cylinder rebuilder.

Many of those track tightening rams were originally filled with oil and then as they leak out most people use grease to refill them. If yours is leaking grease so fast that you need to refill it during the job then it is time to reseal it. It is just like any other ram, but simpler.

Expect the tracks to lose tension over time even if the dozer is just sitting there.

Cmuncy,
Most dozer operate faster in same given gear in reverse. The reason you are not making money or pushing a load in reverse. On a direct drive with suttle it is real noticable.

Brent, I have a D21-6 and when I steer to the right the engine starts to lug. Did you or can anyone advise. Could it be a steering clutch out of adjustment or something else?
