KUBOTA 60" MMM GIVING A VERY POOR CUT

Re: KUBOTA 60\" MMM GIVING A VERY POOR CUT

This is a copy of most of my reply to Jim Wilson in another thread currently running, regarding RFM vs. MMM.

( I have tall fescue grass and if I let it get too tall before cutting, the BX2200 front wheels will lay the thin grass over and then the MMM does not cut that portion as well as the area that isn't touched by the wheels. I then have alternating strips of well cut grass and taller mashed down grass. If I don't wait too long, this isn't a problem. I have heard some people say that the same problem can be worse with an RFM because you have a second set of larger wheels and more weight going over the grass, mashing it down even more before the blades touch it. Again, this would be if you have something like tall fescue. Grasses which grow horizontally by creepers and have springier blades, like Bermuda or centipede grass, would not experience this effect. I've heard some folks say they prefer a ZTR on the taller delicate fescue type grasses because almost all of it gets cut before the wheels touch it.

Other than this, I love my 60" MMM. For me, it attaches and disattaches much more easily than I hear many others describe. Having a smooth concrete floor for rolling the MMM and the tractor helps and coupling the PTO is a breeze once you develop the right touch. (First time took me half hour, day before yesterday it went on in 3 sec.) )

Cutting more often could be helpful. Is replacing your turf with a springier species a possibility? What type grass do you have? How tall do you let it get? How short do you cut it when you mow?

Re: KUBOTA 60\" MMM GIVING A VERY POOR CUT

Thats also were high lift blades can help. I typically let my grass grow to about a foot before I cut with my RFM and then cut to about 5 1/2". I do get it laying down but the medium lift blades I have seem to do a good job of lifting it. If the 60" mmm has high lift blades available, it would be worth considering.

Re: KUBOTA 60\" MMM GIVING A VERY POOR CUT

"The factory orientation of blades on my deck are three blades installed like a straight line across the deck."

I believe that the three blades on the BX 60" MMM are driven by a smooth double "v" belt (B belt) on smooth pulleys. You can orient them anyway you want when replacing the blades, but they will quickly move out of that orientation after mowing for awhile. There is nothing to hold them in "time" (orientation).

Re: KUBOTA 60\" MMM GIVING A VERY POOR CUT

There is sufficient clearance between the blades that "timing" has no pertinence. It shouldn't matter.

I've found that mowing with the grass catcher operating alleviates this problem.

Re: KUBOTA 60\" MMM GIVING A VERY POOR CUT

I get a very smooth cut with my 60 inch deck and my entire lawn is on a slope with lots of angulations. My deck is a little over two years old. I wonder if they changed something on the newer models.

Re: KUBOTA 60\" MMM GIVING A VERY POOR CUT

I'm not sure what to say about the cut quality you're describing. My BX2200 with 60" MMM did an amazing job. I was very happy with the cut quality. I'm not fanatical about it, but definitely notice the cut with each pass. I'd have to think either the deck was changed from the BX2200 to the BX23, or something is mal-adjusted. Strange.....

Re: KUBOTA 60\" MMM GIVING A VERY POOR CUT

sutton,

Have you been mowing near full throttle? The blades on a 60" MMM create an excellent vacuum and pull the blades of grass up prior to cutting. Just wondering what RPM you run when mowing.

Re: KUBOTA 60\" MMM GIVING A VERY POOR CUT

I run at full throttle and it doesn't suck the tall fescue back to full height. The particular species of grass in a given lawn has more to do with the way it will cut than many people realize.

Re: KUBOTA 60\" MMM GIVING A VERY POOR CUT

Not meaning to hijack the thread but has anyone found or tried gator blades or similar?
I found a set of gators that were the correct size in every way EXCEPT for the center mounting hole which was a good 1/2 larger in diameter.
Like I've already posted, my 1st & only cut so far was very good but I also had a mulch plug covering the discharge port and I haven't cut enough with it as of yet to determine if it causes more lift or even effects the lift yet.
Weather permitting I'll get it out again this weekend.

My guess w/ the less than good cuts are:
MMM out of balance,
dull blades,
too low of a pto speed
gauge wheels set too low
tires mashing the grass down too much for the mower to lift
