Re: KUBOTA 60\" MMM GIVING A VERY POOR CUT

I took my deck off, the blades were on correctly, I took the blades off and sharpened them with a 4 1/2 inch hand grinder and vise. Wow, that thing does the Job. I then hit them a few times with a hand file. I replaced them correctly on the deck and in the process cut my finger slightly but it could have worst, SO BE CAREFUL WHEN PUTTING ON BLADES, (I should have had gloves on.) Anyway, everything is ready to go. I am in the process of box blade work so I will not try it out for a week or so. I found one small dent in the separator wall under the deck that I fixed with a sledge hammer. I also replaced the flat thin metal strip Junk and I were talking about. I see no problems with the deck. I Will see how it cuts in about a week after I reinstall it and adjust everything out.

Re: KUBOTA 60\" MMM GIVING A VERY POOR CUT

I just wanted to thank everybody for their idea's..today I finally got to mow and the deck cut wonderful, I still don't really know why I was getting a crappy cut but now it's just fine. Maybe complety uninstalling then reinstalling the deck had something to do with it....again thanks for everyone's in put.

Re: KUBOTA 60\" MMM GIVING A VERY POOR CUT

I have a B7500 with a 60" MMM that leaves a strip right where the blade is just before the discharge chute. I have tried sharpening the blades to no avail. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif This seems to only occur in the early spring or the late fall.

While on the subject of blades can anyone tell me what is meant by (hollow ground) as it pertains to sharpening lawnmower blades? I was checking out a web site about blade sharpeners and they stated that hollow ground was not a good thing? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif I use a bench grinder at the present time. Does a handheld grinder give better results?

Just found this sight and love it!!

Re: KUBOTA 60\" MMM GIVING A VERY POOR CUT

If you grind the blade with bench grinder or angle grinder and place the circular stone perpendicular to the blade, you will have a side that is not straight, but rather an "arc". This will be concave in nature and thus some of the metal is "hollowed out", thus "hollow ground". Turn the stone so that it's parallel to the blade and now you have a planar surface grinding a planar surface and do not get the "hollowed out" effect.

Re: KUBOTA 60\" MMM GIVING A VERY POOR CUT

I have a related question to the original subject of this post:

My BX with 60" MMM just came back from its Spring tune-up, blade sharpening, oil changes, etc.. One of the things I asked the dealer to do was to level and adjust the deck height. After I unloaded her off the trailer at home, I checked the blade height on a level concrete surface. The height adjustment knob was set at 4.0", but the actual cutting edge of the blade (not the mower housing) was only 3.25", a full 3/4" too low.

My question is simple: should the selected height on the blade height adjustment knob (2.5, 3.0, 3.5, 4.0) EQUAL the actual height of the cutting edge of the blade?

I run stock Kubota blades with the BX mulch kit and that extra 3/4" height (3.25 actual v. 4.0" knob indicator) makes a LOT of difference, particularly now in the Iowa spring when the grass grows so fast you can see it.

Re: KUBOTA 60\" MMM GIVING A VERY POOR CUT

I set mine to match the dial's depth setting and I would think thats how it should be.

I'd be curious as to what the dealer says about it...
