Kubota B310 Screw Wood Splitter

I rented one of these a few years back and used my 3rd function valve to power it.



It worked pretty well from the safety of the driver seat. Being reversible, it had the advantage of backing out of a log when stuck. It did tend to spin smaller logs unless you braced them with a front tire.

A lot more expensive though if you want to own one.

I can see a lot of those with a regular wood splitter, too. I've used a screw type, and I think they are slick. I guess it must be the appearance that scares some folks off.

Those were popular a number of years ago and I think worth more to a collector that to even think of using it.

Those are inherently dangerous and I recall reports of accidents such s clothes getting caught in them, etc. I'm a risk taker but not going to use one of those. All my limbs are staying with me.

I had a gas powered screw splitter years ago. I wouldn't call it dangerous. The problem I had is that with big rounds of black locust or elm it would screw itself in and never split, just stalled. Then you have to get the chainsaw and CAREFULLY cut in to relieve it. It was difficult to start on the edge of a big round. It is not good for real short pieces either.I finally sold it and got a hydraulic.

Just picked up a B7100 that came with a Kubota branded screw style wood splitter. Has anyone every used one? Are they safe or is that why Kubota (and apparently everyone else) no longer makes them? Thanks all.

Define safe?
All "this stuff" we use to get work done right down to a simple hammer can be dangerous, especially in the hands of someone without the proper sense or experience required. Not a cut down, I've just watched some people.............:thumbsup:

Saw one at an auction today - sold for $30. Guess people are not to interested in them around here. The hydro splitters sold for their value and then some!

I once saw one of those hooked to a rear axle of an old Chevy. The rear quarter panel on that side was quite dented up as I recall. Not something I would mess with even on a tractor PTO.

I bought one of these about 35 years ago.
It was set up to use on a rear hub of a pickup.
I used it with my 1977 Ford F-250 4x4.
I still do have both the pickup, and the screw type splitter.
I split many dozen cords of wood, but have not used the splitter in the past 25 years.
I just discovered it in the barn. It needs to be sold,.. cheap.

I saw one years ago in back of the shop at our local Kubota dealer. Parts guy told me it was recalled by Kubota and was not for sale.

Odd, but I saw a generic brand screw splitter at an auction yesterday. It looked like it was used once and put away. I still think the best use for the kubota one in this thread is to price it high and try to sell to a Kubota collector on EBAY.

There has to be a history of devastating accidents with these from the 1970's. I did a quick search and apparently they still make screw splitters. Lots of hand injuries reported and some pieces of wood thrown 30' away while clearing a jam however.


Here's a quick vid for the safety police. Notice the guy carefully pressing his leg up against the log and pressing it onto the screw? What could possibly go wrong? Same with pushing against the screw with his foot and dangling shoelaces. And guys here get all puckered up with a 1/16" hole drilled in a ROPS?
