Here's a quick vid for the safety police. Notice the guy carefully pressing his leg up against the log and pressing it onto the screw? What could possibly go wrong? Same with pushing against the screw with his foot and dangling shoelaces. And guys here get all puckered up with a 1/16" hole drilled in a ROPS?

What could go wrong with that???? Spinning tires, wood flipping around, a sharpened screw inches from your body parts spinning, don't really see anything to worry about. Just need to add a monkey with a handgun as a helper and you are all set......

Good point!
If a person is not VERY careful with both chain saw, and/or screw type splitter the potential for injury is certainly there.
Best idea is to keep brain fully engaged while using such equipment, ie: PAY ATTENTION !!!
I have several hundred hours of using my screw type splitter.
I am too old to use it now, and in S. Florida, with no need for split wood.

I remember when OPEC had their embargo in the 70’s and wood burning made a come back. Prior to hydraulic splitters becoming the standard, there were a lot of these screw splitters.

We had one that was on a 3 point hitch with its own frame that would stop the wood from spinning.
My job as an 9 year old was to sit on the seat of the Case VAC tractor and be ready to press the clutch in and stop things when the situation went to h*ll.
Which wasn’t a lot, but often enough.
...and no, they didn’t give me a handgun!

They were dangerous and we only used it 1 or 2 years before getting a hydraulic.

Why would he jack up the vehicle on the same side as the exhaust pipe? Maybe he likes sticking his head down there, the flavor of the exhaust compliments the cigarette hanging out his mouth?
How many sticks of wood before one rips into his fender?
That’s the thing with splitters and chainsaws: You can be perfect 99.999% of the time, and that’s a really good number, but...

Considering that he's pushing with his leg into the screw portion while it's spinning, exhaust and cigarette smoke are the best part of the equation.

Man, I want one of those! That looks awesome! Simple concept, no hydraulics to mess with. A bit on the deadly side if used by a person who is not aware of the dangers, but at the same time I bet it is very effective. If I ever run across one on craigslist or something around here, I'll grab it!
