My neighbor has a B5200 which he said would not start. He asked if I could take the starter out and have it rebuilt, which I did. Now the machine still won't start and I have no power to the small terminal on the starter solenoid. It's a 1986 so no seat switch. I'm not familiar with this machine, is there a fuse block somewhere? There's only one light on when turning the key, which dims when turning to start. I did find a broken oil pressure switch, and was able to make contact and see an oil light next to the one light on the dash. The battery is very low, so we're using a jumper box. Sorry for my long thread, just trying to share everything I've seen so far! Any ideas? Fuse? Poor connection? He claims he was able to start it using a hammer to the starter previously.

I'd start by tracing the power lead from the starter back to locate the bits. Install a good battery with a charge, you have too much going on at once. It could be a safety switch, the ignition switch, a fuse, a relay or a broken wire, bad ground, battery terminals or the battery itself cooked and unable to deliver power even with jumpers. It shouldn't be too difficult to find out how juice gets from the battery to the starter, just be methodical and eliminate stuff, one by one.

Check both cables, especially where the ground cable attaches to the chassis and at the battery. Sometimes the cables corrode internally. Make sure the connections are clean bare metal at battery and chassis and BOTH cable ends at the battery. A bad ground could have made the hammer trick work for a while, but you need to get a known to be good fully charged battery in the circuit, as suggested to properly diagnose the problem.

I have this problem on my 2011 B3300 and it is the HST pedal switch. With the key on I jumped the solenoid wire to the main on the starter to start it until I can look at the switch closer. I hope this helps a little so you can at least start it and move it around.

Thanks for the tips guys. I agree with the too many things going on statement. I need to have a good known battery first. I did notice that the ground lead from the battery was slightly loose and its ground point was painted not bare. I will be addressing these things first. It's a 4 speed manual trans so no HST issue. Also, does anyone know if or where there might be a fuse block? Thanks again!

I have a B7100 (similar but newer) and the only safety switch is on the clutch pedal.

I don't think those models had any fuses in the starting circuit, should be able to start it by shorting across the terminals on the solenoid. (Making sure the clutch is engaged because it probably does have a safety switch there) Make sure all your electrical connections are good, put a known good battery on it and attempt to start it.
Just in case you may have a problem within your cables, read the voltage from the grounding point to the positive anode, then from the negative abode to the connection on the solenoid.

So after our conflicting schedules allowed me to revisit the tractor, I finally got to the bottom of it! For the first time I was able to look at the machine during the day. I put the freshly charged battery in it and still nothing. But this time I noticed that the clutch pedal was hitting the Woods loader frame, thereby not allowing the clutch safety switch to fully disengage. After adjusting the throw for the switch and allowing the pedal stop to actually work, it now starts normally. Hooray! Thanks to all those who contributed and wrote in. Another one for the memory banks!

Good outcome - it usually turns out to be something fairly easy to find, especially in daylight.
There's nothing wrong with the battery negative cable being painted, as long as there is a solid metal clean connection beneath the paint, or better yet, battery terminal spray. It's good to coat the negative and positive battery post/cable connections too, once clean and tight.

i had the same symptoms but it turned out to be a bad connection on one of the fuses which feed the start switch with in turn energizes the starter solenoid. I took the fuse holders apart, cleaned with a brass brush, coated with silicone grease and re-installed. Works every time now.
