I am signing a contract to buy three acres of wooded groud which will have a 300 foot driveway. I will be grading, moving wood, landscaping (moving dirt, rock, etc), mowing, and plowing snow (not too much - I live in central IL). I am looking for a used BX series tractor with a mower and FEL. My question is whether I should consider the 18hp engine or wait to find a BX-22xx. Thanks for your replies.

I think you would be amazed at how much work you could do with a BX18xx tractor. It may just take you a little longer. I think for 3 acres you would be fine with that size. If money is not an option the BX22xx may give you the ability to lift a little more and run a larger deck but I think that is the biggest advantage. I have looked at them side by side and the BX18xx seem shorter.. I think because of tire size. I looked at the BX18 for my 5.7 acres.

Thanks for that answer. Let me ask a more direct question: Did anyone that bought a BX-18xx wish they bought the BX-22xx due to power considerations?

I love my BX, however you really want to think about how much you're going to be working in your woods. The BX is quite a bit lower than say the 7510 series tractor, which is important when working around thick brush, stumps, etc. Just something to think about...

I bought a BX1850 and it has excellent power. I use it primarily as a mower with the 54" deck. I own an orchard and also have a L3010, but the 1850 is terrific. I will probably use the BX-1850 as much or more then the L3010.

As an earlier member said, it depends how much you need to lift. It would be rather limited with a BX-1850 but certainly would beat a front hoe (shovel). I have used my neighbor's 18xx with a FEL and it worked fine to move a dump truck full of rock. I use the L3010 for 10 dump loads of rock.

Couple advantages of the BX1850 is it has a much lower profile so I tear down fewer trees. It also leaves smaller tracks in the orchard that don't look so bad.

Hope this helps!

thanks for the reply. Am I to understand that the only material difference between the two engines is the weight you can lift with the FEL and the speed to which you can accomplish your task?

I assume that the mowing speed would be similar.

I would wait to find a deal on the BX22......I have a BX2200 with the 22HP engine and it is a powerhouse. With the amount of work that you are looking at I don't believe that you would regret it BUT if you opt for the smaller engine you may.....just my opinion.
