Kubota L-2800 oil leak - left side of axle

/ Kubota L-2800 oil leak - left side of axle #11
Last year my front-end differential spindles started leaking, in April I jacked up the tractor, first checked wheels for bearing play, then drained out the 75-80 gear oil out, replaced it with 85-140 Mobil gear oil then added >>ATP AT-205 Re-Seal Stops Leaks, 8 Ounce, so far no leaks. ...
Axle seal on the right front pivot on the B2910 developed a fairly significant leak a while back (would drain down off the dipstick overnight, creating a 6" puddle on the pavement), had been running 80w90 gear oil in it for quite awhile. Ordered the seals from the dealer ... but didn't want to tear into it until after the weather gets bad and outside work isn't a possibility.

Picked up a bottle of that ATP AT-205 Re-Seal over at Summit Racing and threw about 3/4 of it in and topped off the axle with 80w90 gear oil and then used the tractor for about 6 hours or so.

Leak stopped within 24 - 36 hours after that ... no more spots on the pavement ...

Hmmmmmmmmmmm. Same leak, but I see something weird !!!!!

The oil dripping from the left wheel spindle has now changed color!!

When first noticed a few days ago, it was almost clear...........only a slight amber tint.

Today, I moved the tractor and made one scoop of gravel, spread it and then parked tractor again.

As when leak was discovered the other day, I placed a drip pan up right against the left front tire. The other day, what dripped into the edge of this wide flat pan was almost Clear !!

Today, it was as black as roofing tar!!!!. Same leak, same spot, different color of oil.

What is going on? Is the axle oil getting lower and this is heavier dirtier oil now coming out? This does not make sense to my tiny brain. I need to drain it all and refill with the heavier stuff discussed earlier and add a can of some of this AT 205 re-seal stop leak stuff.

PUZZLED !!!!

I opened the drains in both hubs today and there was still about 3 to 4 quarts of gear oil in there, so the leak was not as serious as I thought. I replaced it with 85W140 heavy duty stuff from Auto Zone. Now, we will see if the heavier stuff is less prone to leak. My next plan of attack will be to add a can of the AT 205 Re-Seal stuff which I understand renews the effects of the gasket.

While under the tractor, I also noted that the other hub joint is leaking too, but not enough to even leave a drip on my garage floor.

And..........while at it, I changed the motor oil, fuel filter, oil filter, and air filter.

Busy Day...............

Y'all take care, Bo

With a very small puddle on my floor and the inside of my hubs wet with gear oil, I tried that 205 re-seal, was about 6-8 hrs' of use in two weeks before both sides of my tractor stop leaking. I figure if I get a years more use before replacing seals, it's worth a try.

As has been reported in this thread already, often leaks are "fixed" by replacing UDT with 80w90 gear oil, which is perfectly fine, and often, especially after a fluid change and some subsequent operation, the fluid level will appear low, also normal, just top up.

Thanks for keeping this thread updated... Looking forward to (hopefully) hearing the leak stops!

I think I am lucky with 1500 hrs on my L3010 and no leak yet ( Knock on Wood ). One of the things I do is when I remove an implement I spray it off with the garden hose first and always clean out the area around the front hubs while I am at it. Also when I do the 50 hr grease/maintenance job I blow the same area out with the air hose. I have no idea if this helps any at all but it can't hurt.

I will remember OldPaths solution - thanks for posting that !
