Is it better to have a smaller 4x4 tractor or a larger 2 wheel drive tractor. Say this tractor and a 50 HP two wheel drive. I guess it depends on what you use it for

Bingo!. Another thing is the type of ground you are running it on.. 2WD can work well on flat ground, but not as well on hilly terrain as a 4WD. also how wet, etc. On some places a 2WD would spend most of its time stuck. on others it is just fine.. a 50HP 2WD full size Utility tractor would usually be able to lift larger loads like a full size round bale, and safely pull a larger trailer due to larger frame size and weight, BUT all that said, most people would agree that a in general work a 30 HP 4WD CUT will out work it. Except for the things noted.. By the way welcome to this very very large group of people, and since it is so large there are about as many opinions as there are people:laughing:
All in all I think you/your dad have made a great purchase, and will get a lot of good out of that machine, and you will find uses for that front end loader you never even dreamed of. When you have hydraulic power at your fingertips, you start thinking in a different way. Use the search function of this forum to find anything you want to know, there are over 2 milllion post's here. and a lot of great guys. Have fun.

Is hydrostatic good or bad?

:eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:

Do a search, find an easy chair and settle in for a long, long day or two of reading. We have both and bot have their place, I see neither as "better", just different.

Why would you buy a tractor before even knowing if its the right size for your needs?? Thats crazier than being worried about the paint coming off around the inside of your hitch hole.

If a person doesn't have significant experience with tractors, it is really hard to know what size and how to equip it for a given acreage. Even experienced operators often differ on the "right tractor".
