Just because they're asking 18 doesn't mean they won't go lower. You said the price is a little out of your range..if by little you mean a couple of grand then offer him a couple grand less. Worse he can do is say no.

I think you need to shop more. Also try to not be married to a paint color.

If you are willing to spend in the neighborhood of $15k there are a dozen or so options.

I bought a new Kubota L4400 with FEL for $18K.

Patience is a virtue. :)

When was that? Tractordata has them ending production in 2010.

I too had a price point of $15K for a bigger tractor in 2012.
In my hunt for another tractor I'm looking for one that will lift a ton on the 3pt.

One of it's prime duties will be moving logs. A 12' long white oak log 24" at the big end, 20" at the small end runs about 2000 lbs. This is on the big side of what my Woodmizer LT10 will mill so I figure asking for a ton capacity on the 3pt is about right.
<snip>

Ended up getting my M4700 for ~ $12K.

It will lift a ton on the FEL and 2 on the 3 point.

I think you would be better off listing everything you need to do, everything you want to do (As in if you couldn't it wouldn't be a deal breaker), and the things that you would like to do but really are icing on the cake. Then find a list of tractors that fit your requirements. My Kubota has 8.3-16 front ag tires an they would handle round bales but if I was going to be moving them on a regular basis I would want larger tires. With a full load of dirt the tires squat.

I'm a long-time L4150 fan, and the unofficial bragger-in-chief about all the models in the L4150 series (L3350, L3750. L4350, L4850. L5450).

A little history may be useful here. When the L4150 (L3 chassis) was introduced Kub was trying to penetrate the US market by offering more tractor for the money. They were heavy and strong and the hydraulic shuttle was a great feature. Farmers liked them, but the typical homeowner was looking for lower price. Kub responded by introducing the Grand L series based on a smaller lighter chassis, with "flat floor" operator station and more dashboard electronics. New M4700/M5400 utility models were added using the 5-cylinder engine from the L3 chassis, with no-frills prices and a shifter on top of the trans. Later versions renamed M4900/M5700 had a tweaked fuel system.

Actually the 2 machines are very similar in power and capability. If they have similar hours and condition, I'd pick the L4150. The build quality in those years is legendary. The BF900 loader should handle big bales with ease. The L4150 also has a 2-speed pto and the headlights are high enough to look over the loader driving at night. The thing I remember most about my L4150 was it never leaked a drop of oil anywhere. Pretty cool. Take care, Dick B.
