Why do you need a 4WD? Do you live in a swampy area? You may want to fill out your profile so that you can receive better advice -- for many times your location is used to make suggestions easier to determine.

Thank you ZJ, that is what I suspected all along.BTW would you consider buying a used Universal 445,I see a lot of them for sale up here, they sure look like a bargain, if not what Universal model would you prefer? TY

Lot of Universals run here, allmost as much as Zetors.
I don't know what models are present there, but some of popular models here are:
- 445, 3 cyl (piston dia 95mm), 45hp, mainly 2wd, and 4wd with old DT axle (left side mounted front diff, and left side fwd shaft). A friends tractor clocked over 15000h during 30 years of use. Engine was overhauled at 10-11000hrs (must be original Fiat)

- 550. 4 cyl (piston dia 95mm), 55hp, 2wd, DT and DTC axle. Some of them were blue (Long?) and were known as better quality, but blue are rare. These 550 are known as best models here.

- 530, 3 cyl (piston dia 102mm), 53hp, 2wd and DTC
- 640, 4 cyl (piston dia 102mm), 65hp, mainly DTC, less 2wd

Newer models, with sloped hood are 453, 533 and 643. They have longer wheelbase, 540/1000 PTO and some modiff. done. People usually replace cerrametallic clutch with ordinary organic one at 2-3000 hrs.

All engines have 110mm stroke, 2400 rpm nominal speed, max torque at 1500 rpm.
DTC axles have front diff central located, and fwd shaft under engine and tranny. Final drives are planetary.

Main problem is variation in built quality: you can get troublefree tractor or lemon. Older models, built up to 1990, are known as better quality.
I'm not common with Universal, as I have different tranny on mine, but engine and hyd lift are equal. Engine is harder to start, especially at cold weather, because of low starting fuel quantity (common problem on DPA injection pumps), but they are very cheap on fuel. Engine usually smoke blue, even when new (as on my tractor), as light white damp at crankcase breather.
Hydraulic system is very simple, it has position and draft control- no mixed, draft control sensing is via top link, and is one of best mechanical draft system I used for plowing (even finer than on my new SAME).

I will not hesitate to buy it used, as I know it, and can usually do everything at home.

If you look for Universal, try to find one with 4 gears tranny, with independent pto clutch (lever on left side of tranny). Look for 550 DTC. 445 usually have 3 speed tranny and 2 stage clutch.

( I sure wouldn't get a TN serious NH. The engine is made by Fiat and all they are is a fancy "Long" tractor. )
I don't know how to say this politely, so here goes. Bull.

ZJ has it right. The NH is italian made and the quality is top notch.

I have owned a TN70D for more than two years and its a work horse. No problems other than normal maintance and I use it for farm work, not just as a mower.

A sample of the tasks I use it for:
1) Pulling a 9' 1000 + lb rear blade. This blade is rated for use with upto a 125 hp tractor and the 70 hp TN handles it fine.
2)4x5 baler up and down 10-15% slopes.
3) Dump trailer with two 7k axels. I fill it up with rocks and concerete chunks from time to time. Very heavy and the TN pulls it no problem.
4) Lime buggy. I rent these buggys and they are rated to 5 tons of lime plus the weight of the buggy. This is a load, but the TN will pull it fine.

I looked at the M series kubota's and bought the NH instead. I don't think you can go wrong with a TN.

Phred-I bet that lime buggy with 5 ton on it makes that little TN tractor feel lite. Please don't start down any hills loaded.

ZJ-how much stock do you own in New Holland Company?

I currently own a Massey, Ford, Kubota, John Deere and have had several other tractors in the past, including a 2610 Long. The Long was usable, but you better have a big tool box and from looking at the TN tractor I see a lot of the same as my old Long. I am not knocking the TN tractor and never have I just said I wouldn't want one, but the Long tractors are as I stated you get what you paid for.

So far I have been please with my M6800 Kubota and everything else that I have ever owned that has any Japanese engineering in it.

Theres the answer, he has a Kubota M6800 and is getting jealous of everyone talking about the TN being better in their minds then the 6800. Get over it. You bought a tractor you liked and it may suit you. Don't start flaming another model that is extremly popular and rugged because everyone else is saying that the TN is a tad better then the M6800. I have never heard of any problems with the TN's engine which you say is such junk. Heck, the only problems the TN's have had is a few quality control issues with a loose bolt every now and then. In all cases NH has taken care of any issues without problems. I have never had anything against Kubota and do not knock them as they have a purpose and suit their owners fine.

As for Fred pulling a lime spreader, I do as well with my TN65 and have not had any problems. You see, when us TN owners are running heavy items we tend to slow down and operate at safe speeds. There is no need to run in the highest gear at all times. I have never had a problem with the lime spreader we use making the TN feel light and even if it did how would the lighter Kubota handle it then? Don't talk crap about Fiat and NH when you don't know anything about them or their current products.

If his area is like mine the JD dealers are not the easiest to get along with. Granted the JD 5020 series is a nice machine and I see a lot of them in the grape fields but I don't see to many of them outside of the grapes like the TN's. I almost bought a 5300 before I bought my TN till I started talking to the dealer and after I talked to my JD dealer I was headed to sign the papers on the TN. Heck, I buy my JD parts from a friend who works at Lakeland JD which is 1.5 hours away from here instead of dealing with the 3 JD dealers within a half our from me. All owned by the same guy. Of course now we have to be careful because a certain Kubota owner might tell you these things are junk and are built by Renault, Zetor or someone else.

I would have to say as well that I am very happy with my M6800. It handles every thing I have thrown at it , from loading brush, hay, or whatever else with the loader. To mowing with the bushhog cutter or plowing, or whatever else I can toss at it. I thought about getting a New Holland first but the Kubota better suited my needs. There are pro and cons about every tractor. The thing to do is go with the brand that you like the most or better suits the needs that you have. Whether that means New Holland, Kubota, Kioti, JD, Long, Valtra or whatever else so be it. To each his own.

That's my 2 cents

Either one would be fine. I would lean more to New Holland just because of the local dealer.
