Buying Advice Kubota M7040 with Loader Is this right for me

Swiss, I have had trouble lifting items that are to heavy for the loader. The loader works great, it's just that I seem to always find things that exceed the capacity. Such as 42" arch pipe 8' long. But I got areally good deal on it. If now I could only get it off my trailer.

Welcome, Swiss. Can't improve on advice so far, but thought it would be worthwhile to suggest a toothbar for the lip of the FEL, since you may be doing a fair amount of raw digging with it, such as for the culverts and ditches you mentioned. It gives quite a bit of additional "bite" in those situations vs. just the bucket itself.

That's when you need a support machine like this...

I recently purchased a new m7040sud. It's the basic model of this tractor. Uses the same loader (w/o the third function) and it has a basic gear transmission with a mechanical shuttle. I have the 4 wheel drive version. It's a great tractor at a good price.

I live on 40 acres. The 7040 replaced an old Massey Harris MF50 (~30). Even for 40 acres, I wanted something bigger. While that tractor had good power for a 30hp tractor, it didn't really push snow that well and when it came to pulling heavier things (large rocks, 2-3000lbs) it would lose traction. The 7040 was a great upgrade.

For 300+ acres, I don't think I'd want a tractor much smaller than that, if smaller at all. I don't think you'd regret going bigger, if your budget allows. A piece of advice I've heard on here several times, though, is it doesn't matter a great deal how big the tractor is, it'll just take a little longer for most things the smaller the tractor is.

Keep in mind that because you are only a weekender, you need a tractor and implements to get the work done. You aren't going to have time to fool around trying to get stuff done with light weight equipment. This means that once you decide on what tractor you're getting, you should be considering the best implement that will do the job that you want done. Don't get light or even medium duty implements, you need heavy duty or even extreme duty stuff. You will find that you need to get a job done and not be breaking things. It really sucks to be in the middle of a chore and the equipment fails.

A Kubota M7040 would be the very smallest tractor that I would be considering for your place. An M8540 would be much better in my opinion. Look at other makes also, there are many other makes and models that would be great tractors for your needs. One last thing, you will need at least 3 rear remotes and the additional loader remote for whatever tractor that you end up with. Trust me when I tell you this, these will be needed for the implements that you need to work your place.

Good luck with your search and feel free to come back to TBN to ask any other questions that you may have. ;)

Excellent feedback everyone, I spent some time at the Kubota and a New Holland Dealer today. New Holland as many may know is switching models and the 4000 series is going away so selection is tough on seeing the new New Holland tractors. I have not spent any time at John Deere yet. I have talked to Brady at Barlow. Looking up Barlow was one of the first things I saw after reading many other posts on this site and have a good idea of the going price being 10-14% off of list also from reading. Amazing Forum if newbies spend the time researching before posting. There should be a page counter on reads in addition to the number of posts.

I was also considering moving down to a 6040 if I was going to purchase new to try and stay in a budget level but a few of you are echoing move up in size if anything.

I have 20 years to get all the work done, but as we all know we want it done now and we want it done fast so I understand the need for good equipment and a tractor to fit the need.

The extra remotes are a good heads up, I already saw the need for the extra front end remote for the grapple and the M comes standard with 2 remotes and then you can add 2 more if you need.

I wish I had spent 20 years so far working with tractors then many of these decisions would be much easier. Good thing for me there are many of you that are taking the time to offer suggestions and feedback.

It always amazes me the generosity of those who share a passion and interest in something.

Now I could go out and purchase a trackloader like a previous poster at the end of this whole senario :D

Good thing tomorrow is another DAY!

Country1 love the excavator and chain saw!!! That is what life is about. Now I know why there is so many different types of equipment, and ultimately you need the right tool for the job. So in a perfect world we would all own:

Tractor
Excavator
Track Loader
Bulldozer
Skid Steer
Large Articulating Dump Truck
Small Dump Truck
Mini Excavator
Backhoe

I think the deer meat went from about $800 per pound to about $4000.00 per pound.

**** this hobby can get expensive :)

I recently bought a M7040 ROPS 4x4 with loader. I absolutely love it! I'm a weekender also and it is perfect. You have a little more land and work to do than me, so I certainly wouldn't go smaller. That seat is my favorite place to be. The loader is just that... It is not a bulldozer, So be careful.
