IF you are going to be messing around with ponds then IMO you need an excavator. Something that will keep the machine on high and dry ground and a long enough reach to make it into the pond.
Well worth considering, we've mucked ponds out with our tractors, but will rent an excavator if we ever need to do it again. Some pond work can be done with a tractor, but more of it can be done easier with an excavator at least in our situation. It was kinda fun though.
