How can you not love haggling when you walk away with money in your pocket and not his? And get what you wanted.

How do you know you walked away with the right amount of money in your pocket? Maybe you think you got a great deal when really the dealer would have gone down more if you had played the game a little better so there the one walking away with the money.

I walk away from dealers that don't want to deal. I don't fall in love with stuff, so if the dealer doesn't want to deal the one down the road might. Cash still has some weight to it. We keep going back to this one scenario where his dealer didn't want to budge on price. Fact is some dealers make money on how much they get per unit, others make money on volume. It doesn't take too much research online to figure out what you can really buy something for. The Kubota dealer in my town also has a GM dealership and he is always priced too high and his cars sit around forever, same with his tractors. I can drive 100 miles any direction and buy for much less. So why would I spend more with them? Convenience? Good dealer relations? Eff them. I'm not going to bend over in hopes they won't do it to me again later. I bought my F-150 in a nearby town instead of here for the same reason. They wanted to deal on the truck I wanted. The whole buy local BS is fine with me, but you better bring something to the table if you expect me to pay more.

I don't know jack about tractors, but I'm the one with the cash so whether you want to believe it holds weight or not is up to you. If you want my cash you have to work a little harder to get it.

You are playing my tune!

The "right" amount of money is what you the buyer proclaim it is. After that, nothing else matters. Say you offer 28,000 for that 30K tractor or whatever. The dealer jumps on your offer because he would of sold it to you for 25K . You'll never know that unless he makes that proclamation. Now if you say that it is the unknown that disturbs you, you can play that game with anything. Pretty soon you're not leaving your house because of the "unknowns". I exaggerate but you get what I'm saying.

Pick a landing spot. Try and get there and if you do, be happy. You could have payed 30K like some other people would have. Owning a business is a major pain in the arse. So you helped the guy out a bit by not getting the last dollar. You got some at least.. The world is in equilibrium :)

Good words, arrow. Reminds me of those seven golden words in negotiating: Is that the best you can do?

Yep I have a number in my head when I start and then I start lower. If we agree on the number I had in my head or less, I am fine with it. If they make money on the deal that is fine with me too, that's kind of the point of being in business. I will not however bend over and just pay whatever they say. Even if it's a great deal, a token amount of movement needs to happen in these types of deals.

There are nice ways of haggling. You need to read body language and read between the lines too. Of course it helps to have inside knowledge about markups and everything else that effects price. Sometimes, I just ask "How Much Do You Make on this?", "Are you on commission?". It cuts out a lot of BS in a hurry. If they say it's none of my business (which they never have) I would say fine, I will try and spend my money where I can have an honest and open interaction. I don't expect anyone not to make money.

I was once very honest with a HONDA dealer (for my Mom) that if the offer was rejected by his boss, we would go and have lunch and might or might not be back. It was rejected and we got up to leave. He tried to get us to play more games, and I said, I told you how this would work. He accepted the offer but was quite annoyed.

Thing is your still using money as a factor eventhough you say money is not an issue. If you go the question he asked if price was the same what would people buy? My guess is he is right in his analysis.

And so are you and him.

So let痴 see is the price of the other brands inflated? Or is the price of the kubota deflated?

Let痴 put this an other way.
You offer me a free tractor, brand new any brand I want with one stipulation. I must sign legal documentation that I can never sell it!
Which brand would I choose? Guess what the kubota is not even going to be a consideration on my part.
That dreaded single treadle pedal would have me cursing you every time I had to spend more than 10 min on it and I also don稚 want an other orange tractor since I like my Kioti so much it won稚 be sold till I知 dead and gone.
Most likely I would go with LS or a TYM as I haven稚 owned one before and they both offer me what I want. As pointed out in my post I haven稚 had enough input to make me consider the Mahindra over the others at this point.

That wasn't my experience at all but I didn't buy Kubota. 3 dealers, 3 different prices for Kubota and they were a good $4K apart. Leads me to believe that there is a lot more room in their prices than some dealers let on.

Similar experience with all brands.
