I've recently been convinced to at least consider no longer bothering with Sears tools. Their sockets are very junky anymore, I suppose because the accountants determined that it was more cost effective to increase their replacement rate and decrease quality than it was to maintain the same quality they used to have.

Thats too bad to hear! I haven't bought anything from Sears in probably 3 years or so. Actually all of the "tool sets" and probably 99% of the other Craftsman tools that I have are 10 yrs old or more. I have a 1/2" Craftsman ratchet that was my grandfathers and is probably 35-40yrs old, that is the toughest ratchet I own. I once used it to break loose a couple bolts that I bent my 3/4" breaker bar on, the old 1/2" ratchet and a 3' pipe the bolt was loose. It is true when people say "they don't make things like they use to"!

I agree with most of posters here- i started out with a mechanic kit and it was over 100 peices. I just bought and bought more tools to supplement what i had over time when situation demanded it. MY wife knows i get pissed with wrong tool and she always sees how calm and happy I am when I get th right one to complete the job. I never had a problem. problem is with harbor freight nearby, I now can go get the big and pricey stuff I avoided before like 2 ft crescent wrench, huge locking pliers, etc.

I stopped by sears today and they do have quite a selection of reasonable priced tools. Although the nice torque wrenches are only warranted for 1 year. The lifetime torque has a needle on it which is over a gauge, looked pretty cheesy. Thanks for the replies helpful indeed .

I started with a Craftsman mechanic set that my dad bought me when I got my first (used) car. A full set of sockets (1/4, 3/8 and 1/2) combination wrenches, screwdrivers, Allen wrenches, two ratchets and a couple of extensions. That was more than thirty years ago and I still have every one of those. I've used them hard and never broken one. I've added a lot of tools since. But the thing I wanted to add to this discussion is that you can do very well starting with a big set, as it will be a better value than buying the tools piece by piece. Oh, and don't lend them out!

I would be lying if I said I never used a 17mm on a 11/16" or 19mm on a 3/4". You almost always find a metric size that will work on an SAE fastener. It's not always true the other way around, like 10, 12, and 15 mm, gotta have the correct size wrench or socket.

It is best to use the correct size to avoid damage to the nut or bolt.

Another must have is a good quality (no china tools) flare nut wrench set. When dealing with hydraulic hoses and other lines they are the best tool to avoid damage to the fitting on the line.

Yep. Working on autos, 10mm, 12mm, and 15mm are used quite frequently and there isn't anything SAE even close. I think its a big conspiracy an all to get you to buy more tools. If they only ever used 8mm, 11mm, 13mm, 14mm, 16mm And so on, a mechanic would only need one set of wrenches.

And another thing that drives me crazy is with SAE 7/16 bolts/nuts. They seem to be the only common size that take different wrench for the nut and bolt head. 5/8 and 11/16:confused: Why cant they both be the same size like everything else?...........or should all the other sizes be like this, so you would only ever need one of each size wrench instead of two:D

And I do agree on the line wrenches as well. And if you do your own mechanical work on your vehichles too, they are about the only way to remove brake lines as well. All though when I remove them, the intent is usually to replace them with new, so I just cut them off and use a 6-point socket:D

I tried to post the photo, too, but maybe it didn't come thru. In any event, that type of wrench is/was used by high iron workers, the pointed end is for getting holes in beams and columns to line up so bolts or rivets can be inserted.

I take this to mean the tools I keep in the little compartment behind the seat on my
L3830. There I keep a barbed wire fence tool, a very large screwdriver, and a machete.

And extra shear pins or shear bolts for your attachments, and the wrenches to change them.

At least I can say that I don't have a tool buying problem.

I wish I could say that. As far as I know there is no 12 step program for tool addicts. If there was, they would be saving a seat for me at Snap-On Anonymous.
