This has been a very educational thread, from start to --almost finished? rhamer, thanks very much for all your updates. I'm sure we've all learned something here.
(I hope I never have to take my injector pump apart... going back to my old 504D wagon, I often described the pump as "being built like a Swiss watch"! If you'd like to hear an interesting story, research Rudolph Diesel and a guy/company named Bosch around the turn of the century....)
If you have no luck with your springs as replacement parts, you might be able to find a spring specialist-- don't know if there are even such folks around anymore, but it used to be that there were shops which could fabricate small coil springs to order. WBB in NH
