When your Kubota salesman points out that the little tractor models can handle a round bale on each end, that's technically true. But he ought to say the rest of it - if you are ever only carrying one of them you are way heavy on one end and you have to be extra careful !!

Hey RaT,
As always it's good to hear your voice! I know, I know, the only REAL hills are your beloved Rockies - but how come when my motorcycle runs out of gas here in Massachusetts it's so hard to push it home?????
Maybe if I swore off the sauce.........

The Kubota 3830 and 4330 are fairly light, I would fill the tires and be really careful.

I with Bob on the square bale choice. Last year the 110hp tractor broke down and we had to use a 68hp. It would do it, but it really worked the tractor and we didn't load the kicker wagon to the max. I wouldn't even dream of hooking my L3830 to it! Running the PTO for the baler and the kicker plus pulling the baler and a wagon with 200 bales when the fields are a little soft really takes some power. I am sure the Kubota would handle the round bales, but I would be careful about it.

Hmm, there is always a wide variation of opinions of tractor size for small squares. I have worked on farms with a wide variety of tractors doing the task.

52 hp international, weighs 6000 lbs, droped bales on ground with a high cap MF baler (90 strokes per minute)

Ford 3000 (40 hp, sub 5000 lb as it had no filled tires) IH low capacity baler but roller kicker and towed racks that held 220-240 bales when stacked.

Ford 8630 or something like that with a NH 575 balers or something like that w. kicker onto flat racks w no sides.

All worked fine but the Ford 3000 didn't like going down steep wet hills with all that attached. Had to be careful on the split brakes and be ready to punch the clutch to straighten it up.

Hmmm, Montana huh? What's your elevation above sea level, ness? All of the tractors you've mentioned are normally aspirated. Due to decreased atmospheric pressure you'll be taking a significant horsepower hit if your elevation is much above 2000' MSL. As I recall you lose about 1" of atmospheric pressure per 1000' gain in altitude at the lower elevations. Less going in means less coming out.

I'm sure your dealer's well aware of this but it's worth considering. He can probably tune the engine to maximize it's efficiency at the higher altitudes, but there will still be a HP loss due to the fact that less oxygen comes in on each intake stroke.

Ken,
I guess a lot depends on the size of your equipment, how fast you have to get it done, the terrain etc. I have a neighbor who does his haying with a 30hp +/- Ford CUT. He has a small baler and only does a few hundred bales. He doesn't use kicker wagons, just bales it on the ground and picks it up. If you have several thousand bales knocked down you (at least I) do not want to be picking them up in the field. If your bales average 40 pounds and the wagon weighs in the neighborhood of 2000 lbs (guesstimate), that 10,000 pounds for just a loaded wagon. Add in the baler and your starting to get up there. I have hauled loaded wagons with my 3830 to the barn about a mile down the road. As you probably know those 4 wheel kicker wagons are about the unstable meandering things you want to pull over the road. I go slowly, but I suspect it would not take much to throw a 4600# tractor (w/loader) out of control, especially going down a steep hill. My Kubota manual (page 11) says the maximum load for a 3830 is 5500 pounds including the trailer. The 5030 is rated at a total of 6600 pounds. So I guess I was pushing it. (I have heard the three times the tractor weight theory, so I guess I was ok with that!) As you have pointed out it can be done and I agree with you on your point.

That's right, the only hills are the on and off ramps to the highways. And we slalom ski in corn fields. Did you know that the word "mogul" is an east coast indian term meaning "mole hill?" /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
