Hi guys, one more question. My mechanic said I could bring the tractor down to his shop and put it on the dyno, Is this a good idea? And if it tests well can I run the tractor for 6 months or so without doing further damage to it. Also, I'm still wondering- if the 400hrs showing on the meter is accurate what are the chances that I could get away with a basic ring replacement as opposed to a full rebuild. If you have a considerable amount of blowby, it might be a set of rings, or just one cracked one, also might be a hole in top of piston from someone getting too liberal with the ether can. Free story: We had a guy on the local tractor pulling circuit that had an old Oliver 88, had a blowby pipe that looked about like the one in your picture, except when he had it wide open, it looked like it was blowin as much smoke out from underneath, as was comin out the stack! I told him (I guess you could say I am no fan of him) I could tell him how to fix his problem without rebuilding his motor for about 2 bucks. I told him to put an elbow fitting on the blowby pipe, and that would give him some THRUST!
Thanks Dave. Got a good chuckle out of that story. Well, since my last post I decided to change the oil and filter. Got the oil on sale at TSC (Rotella 15-40) and I have a dozen Fram PH8-A's sittin on my shelf which happen to fit this tractor so I decided to give it a try. The tractor actually ran better, less blue smoke from the exhaust and zero discharge from the breather tube (still has steam coming out from there). Still hard to start and surges a bit when running but I haven't soaked the injector pump yet so I guess thats my next step. Oily, sooty deposits showing up in the radiator too (but not losing any coolant) so its becoming more obvious that if I keep this engine I better pull the head off for a closer look. Gerry
