L2501 DT Purchase

Didn't see backhoe in your specs - did you say you were changing to get a backhoe?

L2501 is known to be a good tractor. It's a larger capacity engine that's seriously detuned to get under the HP limit. That means it's lazy - lots of torque, and makes max power at low revs. To my mind, that means the engine should last forever. It's a reasonably heavy frame, and quite capable. It's surprisingly on paper not really any more capable than a B2650, but it's heavier and bigger - so while it might not lift more, I suspect it'll still be running long after the B gives up.

They sell well. I know most people in that size range like HST. I do myself. But if you want a gear tractor, buy one. When you come to selling I'm sure there'll be someone else who wants a gear tractor who'll be saying "look at all these HSTs, what do ya gotta do to find a gear model." Anyway, that tractor should last you 20 years, and if you're worrying now about what it'll resale for in 20 years you're thinking about it wrong.

Chances are I'm not gonna be around in 20 years, I'm not concerned with resale value.

Can someone explain post 5 to me better, I'm still new too the tractor world compared to most of you.

I'm unclear still a bit how this is gonna affect how I am able to do my work. Thanks

Imagine you’re bush hogging a field, you have to back into a corner or tight area to mow it, first you have to stop and change gears into reverse, to do that you need to step on the clutch, when you step on the clutch the mower shuts off, when you release the clutch the mower starts again and you start going in reverse, then you need to go forward again, and the cycle repeats with the mower shutting off again when you step on the clutch to change gears to go forward.

With HST the mower stays running all the time and you just use the pedal to move forward or in reverse.

Good explanation and that is what I thought, some if the other comments had me confused though.

The way I read them maybe

How would any of this affect a wood chipper or post hole digger? We don't get snow in FL so not concerned with snow blower.

I'm assuming by your explanation that as long as the engine is idling with clutch out in neutral that the PTO will be spinning and my implements working?

I really like my L2501. My first tractor. The Kioti I looked at was very nice too, but after the rebates that Kubota had it was cheaper than the Kioti. Plus having an RTV I was pulling more towards Kubota. Good luck with your decision.

That's because the B's loader doesn't lift nearly as high (it's a ~ 12+ inch difference). If you were to lower the L loader down to the B's max height, the L loader rating will be higher.

You need to compare loaders at the same heights, or compare the loader curves. Looking only at max rating is not useful to compare because it will usually be at different heights, especially when comparing tractors of different frame sizes.

The L2501 gear has a transmission driven PTO. This is an older design and is the least desirable type of PTO. Not that it is bad, there are just better designs now.

That tractor is offered as a low price point simple bare bones machine. I was once told it was offered because some farmers need a basic tractor just to park in the field and run pumps. I dont know if that is true or not.

I have the HST L2501 and love it.

Here is an article that explains the PTO types.

Had my 2501 hst almost a year now on my 10 acres. Very stout tractor and no dpf bs.

Very pleased with it so far.

My current tractor has an independent PTO that's operated with a switch on the fender. I can turn the chipper off and on without climbing on the tractor. My last tractor had a transmission driven PTO and I had to climb on to clutch it and shift the PTO lever. Since I do a lot of chipping I wanted this feature.

If you're going to run a larger size chipper or chip larger material you'll want more power. I have an 8" chipper. Chipping larger material is the one task that makes me want more than 32hp at the pto.
