My L2800 tractor does not have an inner air filter, according to the parts book it is an option. Should I buy one of these filters and add it. Will it change anything on the intake side by adding more restricton.
item 110 on the picture.

I think I'll add one to my L3400 at the 50 hour service. I would think that the extra filtration is a very good idea. I've heard that dust in the engine is a major cause of wear. In the meantime, I make sure I clean my filter pretty often. I use an air compressor to blow it out (inside out). I use my 3400 to drag a horse arena, and I'm pretty much in a cloud of dust the whole time. Air filtration is very important.

I agree on the filter issue, my experience with filters is that a dirty filter is a better filter than a clean filter (as long as can't bypass like an oil filter does) But it will hurt performance and fuel economy. I didn't know if the L2800 was the only tractor sold with one filter, a friend of mine has a B7800 and he was surprised I did not have double filters.

Any conclusions from the "double filter" discussion and experimentation?

I would like to know as well.

I sent him a PM in June of 2007 and he said, "Yes I did buy it and there is no noticeable difference in tractor performance." I installed one shortly after that and have not noticed a difference either.

I tried blowing out the inner filter last time I blew out the outer filter and did not see any dust come out of the inner filter. The outer filter was extremely dusty, which seems to say the outer one works well.

The inner is just in case the outer fails. I don't they they even recommend replacing the inner at regular intervals...because it should always be clean. An outter only is all you need if you service it properly. If you add the inner I think you need to replace the air filter canister, you will not see any difference in engine performance.

Careful using compressed air for cleaning a filter. Knock it on a tire first to remove the heavy stuff. Then use low pressure air. The high pressure air can damage the paper even though you might not see it. If you are one that is concerned about UDT and SUDT, Kbota oil, etc, you should just replace the air filter at least once a year.

The canister does not need to be replaced, just adding the inner is all that is needed.

I guess they have a couple different designs, The parts guy gave me one by mistake once, my normal filter is open at both ends, The dual filter is closed at one end. On mine there is no post for a screw to hold the dual set up.

No need to replace the canister on the 2800/3400. The filters are only open on one end and no posts or screws are necessary to hold them in.
