L2800-L3400 PTO Making the right choice

My dealer is picking my L3400 HST tomorrow to install the upgraded pto parts. No qustions asked. I just showed my salesman a copy of the "original" service bulletin posted here and he got the process moving.

Hopefully all goes well. Always makes me nervous having something worked on at a dealer as I used to work in a Ford dealership. I hate being the customer. Brian

You must have a good dealer. If you don't mind could you post up what you can see, as far as engaging and disengage the difference in the old verses the new style cams are. Do the new cams make any noise? And how long was your tractor down for the cam swap.

This is odd, some dealers are replacing the cams and others (mine include) are not. What's the deal, wouldn't you think that all of the dealers would be on the same page?

Something is not quite right here. I'm with you. You would think that all dealers would do this, but according to the man at the Northern Division, Kubota will not install these new type cams unless my PTO is not working. If it going to take a third time for my PTO to fail before Kubota will install these cams, then as far as I'm concerned they can can take this tractor back and provide me a new tractor with a functioning PTO system. I'm giving them the opportunity to install these new cams before this happens, but they just don't seem to care at all. I use my Kubota tractor to earn a living with and a dependable PTO system is a must.. The thing that really makes me mad is that I still have 10 payment on this tractor before its paid for. I hate the thought each month when I send them a payment that I am paying for this tractor that I know the PTO is not going to hold up and Kubota will not do anything about it. This really does suck.

All in all I think I have a good dealer and a really good salesman which is rare. I have little use for most salesman. The salesman made all the arangements with the service department and I will post when my tractor comes back.

I will put my chipper on first thing which really made that pto sing if you did not idle down very slowly due to the inertia of the 100 plus pound chipping disc.

I would usually not even be sitting on the tractor while operating the chipper and it was not convenient to engage and disengage the pto so I would just slow the rpm down while grabbing more branches.

I hope this turns out well and it is really interesting how some people walk in and get this done with no problems and other dealers say no way. Does not make sense to me. A Kubota dealer should be a Kubota dealer and all should treat warranty the same.

I had the same response with the 3 pt. lift valve and the fluid level increase. Both done very fast.

But untill it is done and back in my posession I really can't report.

Hamer. Do you have another dealer you could try. We have a few Kubota dealers within 50 miles where I am in WA. Just a thought. I would like to here you have a happy ending to your story. Brian

For some reason Kubota decided to do the cam exchange on my tractor. I got a call today from the Northern Division and was informed to get ahold of my dealer and they will take care of it.
I hope these new cams take care of my problems and hold up better than the old style. Time will tell. Thank you Mr. Miller at the Northern Division for helping me get this done.

Hello All. I received my tractor yesterday after PTO cam kit installed. All I can say is WOW. What a difference. I put my chipper on and engaged the pto and went to 540 pto rpm. All quiet and smooth. I then on purpose lowered the rpm pretty quickly where in the past the pto would have been making a racket and not a sound. I mean not even a click, clack or clunk!

I will still operate it properly but I really wanted to know how it would react. This is the way it should be. I do not have a brush hog or tiller but I would highly recommend all of you to contact your dealer and have this update performed while under warranty.

I did not get to talk to the mechanic about the kit itself. I wanted to know exactly what the kit included.

My paperwork shows my tractor L3400 HSTF. Serial number 56283. Install update PTO cam kit per PSB-2005-052-A. Part number TC220-9990. Within warranty period. Split tractor and installed updated PTO shifter kit. Reassembled, filled trans and tested operation.

The dealer included free transportation for this repair. I am out of the two year basic warranty and now under powertrain warranty. Earlier there was some question about whether this would be covered under powertrain warranty. It is covered as the PTO is part of the powertrain.

Again, I thank Hamer for starting this thread and the person who posted this PSB number. If not for these people I would still be grumbling about my PTO. My tractor has been to the dealer 3 times only and all were for items I learned about on TBN. First the 3pt. valve, then the fluid level increase and now the PTO update. Hopefully this is it for repairs. Now I have a two year owners survey to fill out and I will rate my dealer highly but Kubota itself could improve.

Edit Here. The tractor was picked up Tuesday afternoon and retuned Friday morning.

If anyone has any questions I will answer as best I can. Brian

Hey Brian, you didn't happen to get a look at your old cams did you. I was wondering if they were like these with one having a slight shoulder at the end and the other not having any. I really think that this was what caused my PTO to fail the second time. There is no way that these cams could have locked up flush with each other, thus causing the actual locking lugs to be only about half seated together.
Good luck with your new cams. I hope they hold up. From the pictures posted here in this thread, they look to be a better designed locking system. They look like they should be able to be flush when locked together. Thanks for posting the feedback on your new cams. It sounds good. I called my dealer yesterday and they said the new cams are ordered and it will be sometime next week before they can install them. I will let you know how things go.

I did not get to see the old cams or even talk to the mechanic who worked on it. Sorry I could not be more help but I think you may be right about the new cams locking together better. They may have changed more than just removing the ramps. Brian
