So..are we supposed to push the clutch and disengage the pto simultaneously?

I fully pushed in the clutch first, then disengaged the pto...is this wrong???

it certainly the way to go. Even when you disengage you should remove the torque by clutching in case of specially in case of transmission driven PTO. That is how I engage or disengage my PTO.

It is my understanding that if you push in the clutch and disengage the PTO at the same time, you will not hear the OR clutch. I assume this is what everyone is doing that say they have never heard the chatter. If you push in the clutch while an implement is running, you will hear it. I got an external OR clutch for those times I forget to clutch/disengage at the same time. It helps, but doesn't completly stop the internal OR clutch completly. I never hear it either if I use the disengage/clutch method.
For those of you that say you have never heard the overrunning clutch ratchet noise are your tractors HST or gear driven tractors. If they are HST and you are not hearing this noise, what year, or better yet what are the serial numbers of your tractor. ( this question is for HST transmission tractors).

I took delivery of my L3400HST in December '06. I will check my serial number in the next couple of days. The tractor is over at my dad's house. I disengage the clutch and then the PTO and I have never heard the ratcheting sound. I use a 5' rotary cutter with the PTO.

My L2800HST is below the serial # and it ratchets, I haven't used the pto since June 05, tractor was purchased in May 05.
At this time I have no pto implements to use behind the L2800.

Hmm....I wonder if we should send this thread to Kubota.

When you are running a , lets say a rotary cutter bush hog and the PTO is engaged and the blades are turning, your engine RPM's are at the recommended 2500 RPM's,you have let up on the HST pedal and your tractor has stopped moving, if you then pull the throttle lever to decrease engine RPM's does your tractor make the clacking ratchet noise inside the transmission housing as the PTO and cutter blades are slowing down. I don't hear the clacking noise while engaging or disengaging the PTO, only when I decrease engine RPM's, or push in the clutch with the PTO engaged and whatever implement I have on the tractor is still moving, whether it is the tillers tines, or the blades on my bush hog.
I guess what I'm saying is that on my tractor you can not decrease engine RPM's, or push in the clutch while PTO is engaged without it making the clacking ratcheting noise. It still makes the noise even if you gently throttle it down. It has since it was new, and with the old style PTO cams, and it still makes this noise with the new designed cams that are now installed on my tractor

With you serial number and the year you bought, I would say that your tractor has the old style of PTO clutch cams still installed. If you purchased your tractor in May 2005, your basic warranty will be up in May of this year. I would print and save every thing that pertains to this problem and keep it for proof that these problems did exist with these tractors, or keep it the way you are and never get, or use any PTO driven implement with your tractor. The old style cams in my 2005 L2800 went out within a couple of hours of roto tilling. The new style cams lasted about 40 hour of PTO use.

It won't do any good. They will tell you you chose the wrong model of tractor for your type of application and say they are sorry about it.

I am going to assume that this is a very distinct and noticable sound. I probably have about 8 to 10 hours of running my rotary cutter on this tractor. I know I have throttled down the engine with the PTO engaged and I do not recall ever hearing this ratcheting sound. Is it possible your tractor was repaired the first time with the old style cams. I noticed the date on the service bulletin was 12-19-05. The manual for the L3400 is somewhat vague in my opinion as to disengaging the PTO. I disengage the clutch and then the PTO lever. What is the general consensus on this?

8226hamer, I wish you the best on your PTO issue, whether it be a successful repair or a different model tractor. I know it has to be frustrating.

Terry,

Per the L-3400 spec you have a Live pto with dry type dual stage clutch (two separate clutch disks in one package). Usually the closer clutch disk to flywheel is the PTO and after first pressure plate you have the second clutch disk for the transmission. The dual stage I researched and seen if you press the clutch pedal halfway it disengages the transmission but the PTO clutch still is engaged to the flywheel hence where the term LIVE comes from. This gives ability to come to a stop , change direction or gear without PTO stopping it's rotation. Only when you press the clutch pedal all the way is when 1st transmission and then PTO shaft is separated from the engine. it is necessary to clutch all the way to stop PTO shaft rotation prior to decoupling the PTO. On some John Deere like 5105 that has dual stage clutch the PTO can be coupled or decoupled with a handle and then you can feather in the PTO clutch with a second handle to transfer the load slowly to avoid shock load to PTO mechanism.
