Kubota L3130 HST w/LA723 FEL
i am back again to ask another question. sorry. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

i can save about $500 if i go with the R1 instead of the R4 tires. looking at list seems a diff of about $866, sounds like he is not giving me as strong of a discount. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

anybody care to comment on advantages/disadvantages??

how do the tires change the stability, traction, and center of gravity of the tractor???

thanks
bill

Bill .
I went with the R4 tires . I don't use my machine to mow so turfs weren't required . But I do drive on the lawn to put firewood on the porch , etc . So I wanted a tire that wasn't as agressive as rhe R1 . I knew going into it that the R4's are a compromise . Basically I gave up the higher traction of the R1's for the tougher carcass of the R4's . During the mud /snow seasons I have my chains on to offset the difference in the tires . All the best , John

I have the R4s on my L3130. Like them working around my camp/cottage as they don't tear up the driveway, etc. like my old AC WD used to do. Not the best in the woods, but I just put it in 4 WD and it's ok. Attaching a picture.

Bill:

I have the R4's, and I finish mow a little over 4 acres. I find they're a good compromise between the R1's and the turf tires. I do happen to catch a little sod every once in a while if I change direction in a high gear (I have an L3130 with the GST which, incidentally, I REALLY like), but for the most part I don't have any problems.

I don't have a L30xx series, but if you have clay that gets sticky or slopes to work on when it is wet, you may want to seriously consider the R1s.

This year with all the rain we have been having I took my chains off in May and they went back on in June for the rest of the year. I have R4s on my B2910. When the ground is flat and wet, they turn to slicks in a flash of the eye.

On the back slope, when it is more than just damp, they lose traction quickly and that is why the chains are back on.

On the other hand, even R1s can lose traction depending on circumstances.

ON my little BX I just changed from turf tires to the bar tires, which are a bit like ag tires. I find the bar tires on the smaller tractor better for my conditions.

I like the looks and some things about the R4, like they are better on pavement (where I don't go anyway) and may be better on the front for loader work.

If I could snap my fingers and change the R4s on my B2910 to R1s, I probably would. Especially since I don't use the tractor for finish mowing.

A set of tires/wheels are so expensive that you do want to do it right the first time...Best of luck and hope you make the best choice for your particular needs.

It really is a hard call...

Is it OK for a JD 990 owner to post on this board? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I've got R1's on my 990, all 4 of them loaded with antifreeze. I find for my uses I still could use more traction. I've got mostly clay here, which is like concrete when dry and soft and slippery when wet. Either way, if I get the loader dug in a bit, or my landscape rake gets caught on a root or something, the tractor can just stop moving and all 4 tires spin. Also, in the snow (which we already have lots of /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif), I don't think anything but R1's would be that good for me. It is definitely true, however, that R1's chew up the ground. A little moisture to soften things up and I'll leave some pretty severe tracks across the yard, which become semi-permanent when things dry up. Personally I'm not particularly fussy about the yard or what passes for grass around my house, so it isn't too much of an issue.

Depends on your needs, as others have said. For me, R1's are the only choice.

I have a L3010 w/ R4's. I have plenty of clay, and hills, and when its wet they do fill up with mud. I manage to get around. I do believe the R4's lower the center of gravity. I looked at a 3010 w / R1's and it appeared to sit higher. I also move snow with the R4's and have not had to add chains. My driveway is pretty much flat though.

I PERSONALLY would go with the R4's the only times i wish i had AG's is in real muddy conditions, i plow mega snow and have not had a problem and if i did i would probably just get chains. of course most of my snow removal is on concrect or blacktop.

Bill, I have R1s on my Farmall and R4s on my Kubota. I work mostly in sugar sand soil and the R1s will dig in and get stuck quickly. In my case the R4s float on the sand better. Wider, R4s, are better, for me.
