L3400 grinding and shifting problem

   / L3400 grinding and shifting problem #51
Hi Praha,

As I mentioned earlier my Ford 1910 grinds when coming from neutral if you don’t wait. I always close the throttle to idle before shifting. That helps a lot. I assume you are doing that too. I always thought that these non-syncro tractor transmissions had the same issue.

If you have not, I would find a new L3400DT at a dealer and get a test drive and see how it compares to yours. If it is much better you can talk to the dealer with that knowledge. At least the clutch adjustment should be checked.

Mine grinds some and I have found that if I am changing ranges, it is best to put the floor gear shift in neutral and then change range gears and then shift floor gear shift to appropiate gear and this usually elminates grinding most of the time.

Cp1969, not all HD trannys are non-syncroed. Volvo builds a 13spd syncroed unit.

Praha, 98% of all big trucks running down the road use non-syncroed trannys. Next time your sitting at a light next to a big rig listen to the truck when the light changes you maybe able to hear when he shifts into gear to start off and most of the time you can hear the driver just tickle the gears just a little as their winding down.
Oh and these trucks are not the economy ones either.

Thank you guys for you time and help.
I will see a dealer next week. I let you know, but as I see in many posts here, this grinding might be kind of normal ??!!
wushaw, good point /w/trucks/. I guess I should stop whining!?

Actually I did not mean the grinding is normal and OK, but waiting for a smooth shifting a little, might be OK.

The reason you don't hear trucks grinding all that much going from neutral to a gear is that they have a clutch brake to bring that whirling, two-disk mass to a stop.

Somebody will be sure to point out an exception to that statement, so I will qualify it with, "MOST trucks......"

L3400 shifting trouble update,

Brought it from a dealer fixed. They said they readjusted a clutch and lowered idling RPM./850/

It's a different machine now, no more grinding. SUPER fix, super everything. I still have to wait/ kind of/ a second to shift, but it does not bother me, it is expected, a " nature of the beast" as you guys put it. I am thrilled!!

It was obviously completely out of adjustment, new, from a factory.

Thank you all for your help and time you spent with this topic.
