L3400 Questions

Most people prefer hydros to gear tractors. After three gear tractors, I got a hydro and love it. As far as the L3130 that a previous poster suggested, it is heavier and has much less HP. The equivilent in the L series would be a L3430 or better. There have been some complaints (not everyone) that the L3130 is a little underpowered for its size.

135 acres is alot of acres, Gyro. How much of it are you planning to work and what do you plan to do with your tractor? The geared, basic tractor idea is a good one....most bang for the buck; but I think 34HP is a bit small. Ask your dealer to quote an L4400 with loader. It too is a basic tractor, the next size up from the L3400. It'll be more, but it's definitely more tractor. 10 more HP and about 500lbs. more weight.

I find my L4300 (predecessor to the L4400 and about the same power and weight) to be a good match to my 50 acres; I definitely wouldn't want smaller. But, EVEN THEN, I've got an old bruiser of a Ford 4000 as backup for when the ponies are needed.

No sense in buying an L3400 today because it fits your budget and then, 18 months from now, swap it off because it was too small for the work. Better to save a little longer and then buy what you really need.

Aaron, I have no financial intrest in Kubota. I just wanted you to yourself to check out the 3130 if you have not already. It does have 2.7 less HP than the 3400, but I consider that to be a minimal difference, less than 10%. It does however have ABOUT 70% more lifting rating, on both ends if you get the 723 loader, which is substancial IMO. This was just FYI. I find it to be more tractor for not much more cash. They both should probably only be pulling 5' attachments, so not much differance there. I'll probably end up with one if I don't get a m series 2WD for about the same money.

If your considering a rear mounted snow blower I'd go with HST. Otherwise it is just a convenience thing. It is nice though.

Just stopped by a dealer today on the way back from a hunting trip. Since you seem set on the L3400, check out the HST version. That is one sweet machine. I fell in love with the thing when I gave it a test drive. Still it has 27hp on the pto, equal to any 8N, and weighs in about the same as your 8N. So with all four turning, you will think of it as your dream machine. I kind of like gears personally, but if my wife gives me the extra grand or so on purchase day I might just go hydro. Good luck.
Also, though you have a FEW acres, you should be fine with it. I've read a story on the net some time back where one old timer told of working his 300 acre cotton farm with two 8N's. 150 acres for each, wow! Now that is a lot of farming for such a small tractor but once it was done.

The HST is very nice, I hardly ever use the brakes, it does its own braking, plus running the loader and everything else nothing to shift, just put it in M, set the throttle and step on the pedal from there on out.... Very user friendly and easy to drive, you might not want to tell your wife though, she will want to drive it then.... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I too stopped by the dealer today(dealer # 2). They had one 3400 with no loader on it & R4 tires. I took it for a little spin. The thing looked small compared to the 3130, but once you sit on it, I was very surprised at how big it feels. I am in LOVE. MY wife just rolls her eyes when I talk about it. I said "but honey, it matches my chainsaw, I have to have it".

This dealer quoted me a price of $15800 for the L3400DT with FEL, AG tires, grill guard, Block heater. Also in the quote it said "foldable ROPS". Is this even an option, or is he just trying to make the quote more impressive?

My L3400 came stanard with foldable ROPS and without block heater, I paid $ 14700 and got $ 500 more off financing it thru the revolving credit for a final of $ 14200 just a couple of weeks ago! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
