L3400DT grind when shifting?

I'm in the dark a little here but is the DT a synchronized tranny?

I would look at the clutch adjustment first but if it is not doing it all the time I doubt it is that. Just to make sure maybe you should check it or have it checked.

If it is a synchronized tranny my next guess would be that somehow after setting in neutral for a while if something associated with the synchronization process inside the tranny was bad it could be allowing it to "drift" a bit and causing the grinding.

I have a grey market Kubota w/ shuttle shift (GL-21) and I can shift gears "on the fly" all day long without grinding, as long as I'm going up. Down shifting is another story. To use the shuttle I have to be at an almost dead stop.

HTH.

I can now (with a little practice) shift the 4-speed half on the fly w/out rattling anything. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

When you are bh-ing or whatever do you have both shifters in "neutral"? maybe keeping the 4-speed shifter in a range (3rd or 1st are out of the way) would keep the tranny from free-wheeling and causing the rattle.

Side note qestion - How do you guys mount up on your rigs? No matter how I do it, I seem to get both feet on the left side board and have to shuffle - step over. What's the secret? /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

When Backhoeing I do keep the 1-4 shift leveler in gear. I have been lately seeing if before I shift the f-r lever I take the 1-4 to neutral.
Maybe I will ask the dealer to take a look at it I don't know much about adjusting the clutch or if it is synchronized tranny.
Jeez I just had it in last week to have the 3 point valve replaced wish I would of had them look at it.

I experimented with this on mine yesterday (while loading to take her to the dealer for the 3-point valve repair).

I too would get a little rattle when I leave it idle for a while in neutral. Nothing too much, just a little rattle. With the 1-4 in any position, by the way. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Av8r,
Would you mind asking your dealer if this is normal I talked with mine yesterday and he said it was I would just like to verify this.
He said when it is sitting in neutral the gears misalign and often it will grind.
BTW the 3 point valve change is a great idea big difference for me.
Thanks Chris

banjo:

I've had my L3400DT for just over a year now, and I've been bugged by this the whole time. I've posted on it in the past, but apparently I haven't explained it clearly enough.

Let's say I've been using the hoe, or some other activity where the tractor has been completely, totally, incontrovertibly STOPPED for at least a minute. When attempting to take off again, I fully depress the clutch, wait about a second, and then shift into L (assuming I'm wanting to go forward--the same thing happens in R). Here's the kicker: I have to wait exactly 5 seconds to shift into 1-4 or gears will grind. Keep in mind the tractor hasn't moved--not one inch. Attempting to shift into 1-4 before that 5 seconds is up will make the transmission sound as if it's had the mystery chili special at the local greasy spoon.

I must point out that 99.99% of the time, I set my hand throttle to whatever RPM suits the job I'm doing. I have found that at low idle, that 5 second delay is a bit less, but it still seems to me that if the tractor hasn't moved, there should be no grinding--synchronized or not.

What am I missing here? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I get the grinds too unless I push in the clutch for about 5 seconds and wait to shift.

It seems worse when the tractor is pointed up hill.

Oh well.

My Ford 1910 does exactly the same thing. When in neutral with the clutch out the main shaft of the tranny is turning. I have to wait about 4 or 5 seconds for every thing to stop after pushing the clutch in and then shift into gear. If I'm in gear I don't have to wait, I just must stop completely and shift.

This is quite normal. It's been this way for over 20 trouble free years.

The waiting seems to be the key to stopping the grinding.
Lately after backhoeing when I get back in the driving seat and throttle down I push the clutch in for about 3-5 seconds then shift and there is almost always no grinding.
In other situations when the tractor has been sitting still idleing for a while and I am ready to shift I push the clutch in and rev the motor for a second then let it wind down and I shift I have never had it grind doing this.
