L3800 hydraulic GPM and 3pt splitter

A possible option to make a 3PH splitter cycle faster is to use a renerative circuit like the Sun option attached. A few things to keep in mind if considering this option.

1) Like Messicks video states, be very aware of potential heat issues if running off the rear remotes.
2) For regenerative to work the best the cylinder should have around a 2:1 area ratio. Example: 4 inch bore with 2 3/4 rod. Reason for this is that while extending you only have the rod area extending the cylinder. 2:1 also gives similar extend and retract velocities.
3) Hoses MUST be sized to provide minimal back pressure on the extend stroke. Any excessive back pressure in the rod end detracts from extend force.

Advantage of regen is faster cycle times with same flow rate. Since tractors do not have the hi-lo style pumps used on log splitters your extend speed will stay constant until you reach the shift pressure. At 2000 PSI with 2 3/4 inch rod this would approx 6 tons force before the pressure shifts and your speed drops in half.

I am just showing this as a possible option to a stand alone splitter. I have no idea on what the cost of the Sun valve is nor how difficult or costly an over sized rod is on the cylinder.
I dont see how regen works here...

On a loader, the rod & cylinder lines are connected & given pressure. The larger cylinder end surface area overpowers the rod end & it extends. Spare fluid from the rod end speeds up the extension at the cost of power. That only works on extend though. You want power on extend on a splitter. You want speed on retract, which is the opposite of what regen gives you.

OP, lets put it this way, I can split a cord of hardwood on a quart of gas with my 6HP Honda in very little time, I have had it for 6 years, I NEVER repaired it, I change the oil and spark plug each season, I split 25 cord of hardwood per season with it. It's easy to move around, and stores easy, it also keeps hours off of our tractors.. I bought an American splitter for the TC45DA and it was slow and I mean slow..

The Sun example that I had on the attachment has a pressure setting to shift from regen to normal extend so you now get full force at reduced speed. Typical loader valves do not have the pressure shift feature nor do they require it.

Ah, was wondering if it was something along the lines of a 2 speed pump. Sounds like it & you'd get regen speed then a kick down for power.

Personally I'd go with a separately powered splitter still so I could use the tractor to move wood, if I had any real wood to split. I may pick up a cheap 3pt splitter to make a can crusher/baler. But that's more of a hobby project if i ever find cheap doaner parts & can live with annoyingly slow speed there.

Yes this regen solution also provides two speed feature..

I can see the interest in a 3 point splitter if only splitting for an hour or two every year for recreational fires. Agree For serious keep the house warm splitting I believe there are better options
