L4240 vs MX5100.. tough choice..

Both, or all three are going to be great tractors, can't really go wrong. I like simple and do not like paying for the bells and whistles. Mx5100 looks like a model I'd love to own!

1st let me say this i dont like all the bells an whistles on the fancy tractors.an heres why if the computer system goes down in the tractor its very costly an time consuming to fix.the MX5100 is a tough stout no frills tractor that can do alot of work.

I like elegance, & bells & whistles, & am willing to pay for them.

Throwin' in my vote for the Grand L.

Oh, plus the MX has a turbo, which I wouldn't want since you're supposed to let it cool down before turning it off. This has been debated on here in a few threads, but waiting around for a tractor to cool down before I can turn it off does not interest me at all.

ive run turbo tractors all my life an i let them cool down while im going slow or idling getting ready to shut the tractor down.theres no reason tobe scared of turbo tractors.i dont even like the frills of a cab tractor.an weve had a cab tractor for 34yrs.

This why they make so many diff models.

Like you, I'd rather not have the turbo...

Yep, I like the features on the Grand L also; nothing wrong with others as mentioned all good tractors.

Having traded in a naturally aspirated Case 80HP for a turbo M8540 a couple of years ago, I can say all my concerns about a turbo were unfounded.

Not the turbo debate again.
If you have been working the tractor hard it should be cooled down properly turbo or not. If you have been idling around shut it off, turbo or not.
Whats the big deal about the turbo.:confused2:

thanks for all the input, I think I am going to go with the L4240, I do like bells and whistles.. the more comfortable reclining seat alone is awesome. I think ill go down to the store this weekend and see what price I can get with a front loader and a rear mower.

I think you will really like it, we were going to order one with a cab when we found a lightly used L5030 HSTC. The so called "bells and whistles" on these models are pretty much standard on the Ag tractors in my area and sure make a long day in the seat much more comfortable.

Hi Code54, im back to looking at the L4400 because i dont like that i cant get the BH 92 with the MX5100 in Australia. Found out the mx has remotes at rear i think but not the L4400 HST4WD 4FEL BH92 with hyraulic thumb but dealer says can add a remote for extra money if i want to use extra implements like log splitters etc . Can you explain why what the difference between remotes and what is being used for the hydralic thumb please? Im trying to weigh up the pros and cons of going with 4400 to get the bh92 or get more hp with mx but not get the bh92 and ending up with smaller crap..lol

All I can tell ya bud, is I had a 4400 for 4 months, and was wondering if I short changed myself, always on my mind. Pound for pound for what it was, it was an awsome little bulldog. I knew in the back of my mind tho, I needed more tractor.

My dealer cut me a deal on a trade in for a mx5100, I am super pleased with the machine, everything I wanted to begin with. I am so happy with it that im not even upset over the money loss at the trade in. Just tryin to say go with your heart bud, only you know what you want(need). Dont be foolish like me, buy right, once!

Rear remotes are GREAT!! Get them if you can. I never had them on a machine before and now would not want one without them. I bought my 5100 with one set and are currently adding 2 more sets. Here in the states the 5100 does not have any rear remotes standard but up to 3 sets can be added. The first set is the most expensive set, then the 2nd/3rd will cost you less. I believe the L4400 can have factory sets added also but am not 100% positive.
I use mine to control a front grapple, great for grabbing logs and rocks. the 2nd set is the hydro top link - allows me to quickly hook up implements and control there "up and down" angle. The 3rd set will allow me to have a hydro tilt - excellent for blade work - allows you to work a blade and cut crowns on roads/paths to allow drainage (this way you are not getting on and off spinning the factory screw adjustments all the time to account for hills and such)

Normally the hydraulic thumb is controlled by the hoes hydro system and is not run off the rear remotes. This makes the system work a lot smoother and makes it a 1000 times easier on the operator. If you controlled the thumb off rear remotes the lever would be set up to be controlled from the regular operators position and not with the operator sitting on the backhoe attachment so it would be an ergonomic nightmare.

I was reading the post and was thinking, if you can get the BH92 for the L4400 - can't you buy JUST the BH92 and have a subframe imported from the states for the MX5100. Sounds like it would give you the best of both worlds - bigger tractor and the backhoe!

I do have to say, be careful buying a machine that you feel maybe a bit too small. I did that and only kept it for a year and the entire time I had it I kept thinking I should have bought the bigger one.....
Good luck!!!!!
