I stopped out at the land yesterday where the tractor is located. I didn't have time to tear into this yet, but see the components I need to inspect and clean.
The loader lever solidly does NOT want to go into float detent. Can disassembly and cleaning be done without removing the entire valve assembly from the tractor?
Thanks for the info and assistance!

Yes you can. On the bottom of the valve, you're see two caps. One should be longer than the other.

The longer one is the float spool. Be careful taking the cap off because often a couple of small balls and springs will pop out. You don't want to lose that.

Here is a quick video of a detent rebuild , should give you some idea of what to expect.

Yesterday I finally had time to look at this a bit. Thanks to the tips provided, I had a baking ban under the assembly for catching the ball bearings as the fell out...
Lots of corrosion, the spring was broke in half, and the larger ball bearing was encased in 3/16" of solid corrosion in the bottom of the tail cap! No wonder why the float position wouldn't work....

So while I'm waiting for new parts I put the assembly back together without the 4 smaller ball bearings, without the larger ball, and without the spring.
Float function will work by holding the lever up, but now I noticed that the lift function is very slow. Will that return to normal once I get the new parts installed? Or did something else happen?

Finally got around to fully tearing into this for repair. Really corroded in there, the old 'ball holder' part fell apart trying to unscrew it. I think they put loc-tite on that from the factory too. But I finally did convince it to come out. New rebuild kit with all new lower end components, springs, ball bearings, caps, etc.. was $114. But that price was worth it to have my detent float function again, and nice smooth operation. All went together nicely and works great. I used some grease in the new parts and balls, I don't store the tractor outside and don't plan on using it in the rain much so it should be good for a long time. Thank you to those that chimed in!

Very helpful to put a dark tarp down under the tractor and make a flat section with built-up sides under the area where you are working. If you happen to drop any parts or balls, with clumsy big hands like mine, it sure does save some searching and lots of bad words said. Everything stays contained and easy to find if dropped. Also putting some grease in the center spring and small ball holder areas really helps when re-assembling, it keeps things "stuck" together nicely.

When buying ahead for a job like that, (for me was the rear quick couplers on my JD 2030) I buy a couple of the balls too, since I know I will drop/lose some.
