- Kubota 5400 4x4 with ROPS, canopy, 1001 loader, heavy duty quick release bucket with tooth bar, 280 Bush Hog brush cutter, 6' Bush Hog box blade, 6' Bush Hog plug aerator, 3 point hay spear, 6' Lands
Lonestar, first, I'm with Rat, I'd never consider a tractor without 4wd. It really makes all the difference in the world. I may go several weeks and never enguage it, but when you need it, you need it.
My neighbor has chicken houses. He has a two wheel drive tractor. He calls me regularly to help him do something because his tractor can't get enough traction. I have another neighbor who raises cows. He has two ag tractors, both from the 1960s. He calls me too for the same reason.
Again, this is only my opinion, I'll only have a 4wd tractor...until they come up with a 6 wheel drive tractor. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif When do I enguage 4wd? Using the box blade, the plug aerator, the disc harrow, pulling trees and stumps, everytime I'm doing loader work, when I mow on a gravely (sp) slope, etc. So you see, I use it a lot.
Next question, why the 5400 and not the 4700. Look up some of my old posts. I don't think my posts are around anymore from when I bought, but maybe some of my later posts are there when I explained why I bought what I bought. Briefly, I wanted to buy a 4700 (it was replaced by the 4900). I was looking for a used one with less than 250 hours...I hate paying new price for anything. I found a 4700 with 60 hours but the dealer wouldn't come down in price. At the same time I found a 5400 and 6800 both with less than 100 hours. The best deal was the 5400, so that's the one I chose.
I'd also look at New Holland and Deer, both make fine products. I just liked the Kubota best. To each their own.
If you have any other questions I'll be happy to answer them. When I was buying I got a lot of info from this board.
