What is max RPM in midrange of the L48? Tach on the L48 goes to 3200, at full throtle mine only gets to 2500. Is that normal??

Hmmm...is that under no-load conditions? Out of gear, etc.

The hp rating is listed as 48 @ 2600 rpm so your L48 doesn't quite get there.

I'll check the workshop manual and report back.

The three hydraulic pumps have to take a toll on rpm. Mine is in winter storage otherwise I'd check for you. My recollection is that the rpms don't reach very high.

My SUV's speedometer goes to 140 mph while the electronic cut-off is at 110 mph if that is of any significance.

no load, full throttle.

The manual states that the engine is protected by a governor. It messes with the fuel injection.

The governor should allow the engine to reach the 2600 rpm so that is likely not the problem - unless it is out of spec.

There is nothing stated in the manual about maximum rpm or even at what rpm the governor cuts off the fuel.

There are many other reasons a fuel injected diesel engine is sluggish. Fuel pump, injectors, fuel filter, fuel quality, water in fuel, etc., etc. You may just have to go through the possibilities one by one to find the fix.

I'd start simply with fuel injection cleaner added to the fuel to see if that helps.

After many hours the fuel injectors actually wear out and need to be replaced.

You may need to have it evaluated by a diesel mechanic if someone on TBN can't come up with a solution.
