B3200, L5740,
Can anyone confirm the actual capacity of engine oil by experience. I think the book is wrong.:confused3:

A 3940 is 8 quarts

The books show a capacity of 9.9 quarts. Last Friday, I did the 50 hour service on mine. After draining from both drain plugs and changing the filter, I added 9 quarts and about a fourth of another quart bottle and let it sit for about 15 minutes while doing other items. When the oil level was checked, it was way too high. I cranked it and let it idle for a few minutes, then shut it off, let it cool and checked it again. Got the same reading as before. I ended up draining about a quart back out. I then went and made notes in the manuals to only add 8 quarts before checking it. Is this what you are suspecting?

Yep. I added 9 liters thinking I would be a little low but ended way over. So I am on my way out to drain some out.

When I bought my L5740 I remember the tech at my dealer mentioning that it is really difficult to get all of the fluids out when changing them because the geometry of the engine. He specifically told me to keep an eye on the the fill levels when replacing the fluid so not to overfill the reservoirs. That said, he did not give me specific amounts to refill with; just to watch it carefully. I have not done my 50 hr service yet, but will within the next few weeks. I'll try to reply then with my experience.

Anybody consider that the engineers who developed the engine may have the right oil amount but the oil level gauge (dipstick) might be wrong? Yes, mine was above full when I got it, was above full after I changed the oil, and is still at the same level above full 170 hours after that first oil change. But -- the L3710 I traded in was the same way. In 8 years the oil level never dropped as low as full. I've gone under the assumption that the people who designed the engine knew what they were doing and there is always some drainback from the horizontally mounted filter that affects the level when the engine is stopped. I prefer my car which has no dipstick. While driving, I select "check engine oil level" and it gives me a graphic display of where the level is during operation.

I drained mine, changed the filter, poured in 2 gallons. It was all I had. Started the tractor, ran it a bit and shut it down and let it sit for a bit. checked the oil stick and it was dead on. It's dead on every time I check it and I check it at least every other time I start the tractor.
I'm ashamed to say that I have never looked at the book for the capacities.

Well that is darn close to what I ended up with in mine.:confused3: So does one believe the book or the stick. Generally I go by the stick unless I am sure it is wrong.
