I'm not a mechanic, and I don't play one on TV, but just because the manual says you can go 400 hours, I'm not sure I would. I would probably change the engine oil every spring. It's not just dirt that causes problems, it's condensation, especially bad in the winter in cold climates.
That said, if oil that is two years old can cause a serious problem on the first cycle, I'd be little nervous.
