I have a b2400hd hydrostat trans, with a LA351 loader. the tractor is 7-8 years old. The loader will not go down when pushing up on the joystick until i reach the float postion, then it falls down and floats. I can make the loader go back up but seems a tad bit slower than normal. The tilting of the bucket works great. Is it something in the "spool/control" valve or what else to llok at? I teach an auto tech class and trying to help a student learn about hydraulics, but I think I am learning more than he is.

Sounds like something in the lift spool is defective. Could be some crud has lodged itself in the spool or an o-ring has hung up. A disassembly of the spool is probably required. However, I would first remove the spool's end cap and see if everything is tight and no crud is in there. This usually prevents the float from working but it's worth a try.

Just a thought, but make sure your three point hitch control lever is in the hold (center) position. Your B2400 may be different than my B7500, but on mine the hydraulics are tied together and this can affect loader operation.

I would also check the quick connects (I assume it has them) - on the family JD I have noticed they "click" into position - but are not really "in position" - in this case you could get fluid into the cylinder - but not back out... perhaps... at least that's the easy place to start.

i second that, had one do it last week and it perfomed as you describe. swap the couplers off the dump circuit onto the lift circuit, its not unusual for the couplers to close internally while they are properly clipped on. unscrew them and do some swapping out. just make shure you relieve all the pressure in the loader first.
