Land buying question

That's a great example on how this varies per region. $500 per acre would be awesome though.

I'm guessing it might be crop dependent as well.

Am I correct in thinking that Hawaii has many micro-climates, some of which are especially suited for specialty crops? Steve

Yep, very true

For example: since midnight, I got 3.41 inches rain, we are about 1100' elevation. Temp wise we had 81 once last year
A couple miles down the road they got 2.88, think they are about 300', they see mid 80's regularly
A friend in Hilo, 20 miles away got 1.51, they are about 1300, rarely see 80.
Expecting 6 inches snow on the mountain.
At times I can see it rain above or below use, left or right, or be in thick of it and drive out of it in half a mile.

Great link! But to the OP also look into "leasing" to a hunting club also if it's not ALL plowed field. Around here (NE Mississippi) they just about pay the taxes. Plus they act like a street gang to protect YOUR property which they regard as their "turf".

Leasing to a hunting club is a good idea, in this case though my neighbors (about 6-8 people) all hunt it and wouldn't be happy with me if they had competition. Lots of great ideas/suggestions in this thread.

I let the family that owns the property next to ours hunt on it. They keep a good eye on things for us. However, I gave them written permission in case the DNR stops them.

I've really enjoyed my limited time on the big island... so many different climate zones plus the wow factor of playing in the snow and an hour later lounging on a Tropical Beach.

Sadly... none of my friends in Hawaii live on the big island.

Did look a nice place with some land and a shop... I'm sure I could have been quite happy there!

I've got 2 parcels licensed to farmers for sweet potato and ginger. $500 per acre per year, single crop.

David,

Just curious -- do you have use-value assessment for ag. land in Hawaii? If so, do the assessments differ according to the "profit" potential of parcels?

It's a big advantage to get along with your neighbors in the country, I don't have many but everyone seems to notice when something is going on. I feel my place is rather safe when I'm not around. We all help out when it's needed and kind of stay to ourselves otherwise.

Yes, but I can't explain it LOL has to do with soil type and use. Here is mine:)

Agricultural Assessment Information
Acres in Production Agricultural Type Agricultural Value
20.83 Soil:8 Use:A $8,749
0.25 Soil:H Use:S $500
This parcel has land in agricultural usage and therefore agricultural usage assessments have been made.

Well, you got a BI friend here on TBN :)

On Monday, a small group of us get together for what we call "happy hour" basically a couple of drinks, usually dinner, usually in town, sometimes at someone's house.
This week, a neighbor couple announce they will be bringing a new couple to the Thai restaurant . This new couple are friends of friends living on the mainland who suggested they look these people up on their BI trip. So I guess you don't really need your own friends, just have friends that do LOL.
