I am in the market for a 72 inch finish mower my choices around here are land pride and woods. The land pride is 1675.00 and the woods is 1779.00 can anyone give me any pros and cons of these 2 mowers? I will be mowing 4 acres of bermuda grass that is growing very fast. I am cutting it with a 60 inch ZTR right now that i use in my lawn service and its time to put my kubota to work.

Didn't list models can't give any specifics.

In general those are two good brands and should be close to each other.

You can compare a few things.

1) Blade tip speed. Higher is usually better.
2) Blade size, geometry etc. Thicker and heavier is usually more robust
3) Weight. Heavier may have a thicker deck and be more reliable long term. Too heavy and it may lead to ruts in the yard.

My personal preference is Woods, based on a disappointing experience so far with the one piece of Landpride I own (not a mower) and the way that Woods stuff looks really well built.

However, based on both specs and reputation, they are considered about the same quality.

I have the Woods 72" side discharge mower. It is a good unit and does a good job of mowing.

However, I would almost bet that your 60" zero turn will mow the same four acres faster than a Kubota with a 72" rear mower. A rear mower about as clumsy as a (fill in blank).

Personally I am not impressed with Woods paint jobs, it seems they must not use primer coats. I have a RM990 and am in the throes of rebuilding the deck where it has rusted to the level of stress cracks secondary to thinned metal. Not sure about the Landpride paint, but I can say I have been thoroughly impressed by the quality and durability of the paint Bushhog brand put on the 287 brush cutter I have.

wickedinhere, Why do you want to stop using the ZTR? I had to borrow my dad's Ferris to cut my yard ~6 acres because of the above problem. His unit has a 48" deck and I found I was able to cut it in the same amount of time that it takes with the JD5300/Woods RM990 combo and it looked more "groomed" according to my wife. Based on this I have been wondering if it would not be wise for me to consider a Kubota 331 with a 72" deck, the extra 2' would probably knock another hour off of my total time.

I never thought about how different it would be mowing with the tractor instead of my ztr. It takes me about 2 to 2.5 hours on my ztr mower to mow my property you are probably right about taking longer on the tractor. I have 20 apple trees lining my driveway and it would be very hard to mow around them
with the tractor. I think i might hold off on the finish mower right now.
thanks guys

It seems like a lot of people who use tractors to mow around orchard trees end up completely removing the ROPS due to limb hits and damage. I think holding off on a finishing mower will save you both $$ and work.

I have a Landpride FDR 1672 RFM I purchased in February. So far it has been great, gives a good cut, no problems. Folks I know who have Woods have ones that are 8-10 years old and still going good. I don't think either is a bad choice.

I do agree a ZTR would be better for cutting close to trees and flowers. If I'd had a ZTR, I wouldn't have the RFM. My yard's pretty open so I couldn't justify ZTR cost when I already had a tractor.

Since you already have a ZTR - you'd be near insane to spend $$ on a RFM. If the cash is really burning a hole in your pocket, I'll PM you my address...

Seriously though - the ZTR will be as fast if not faster.

I have a wife and three kids.

There is nothing like a Saturday morning, out on the tractor catching some rays.........alone!:D

I vote for taking your time!

with the ztr for now.

I can tell you for certain that I can get a better cut at a higher ground speed on the ZTR when compared to the Woods RM990. The 990 covers a lot of ground in one pass but I have to travel slower and the cut quality suffers as the blade tips dull from hitting ant mounds etc.

I own a Woods brush hog. It's tough. I'm happy with it. Don't own anything from Land pride yet......Maybe I will........Maybe I won't

There is one thing that influences my decision though........

Woods lists a phone number so I can talk to a real person if I have a problem..

Land pride does not.....and I hate dealing with manufacturers problems through e-mail....No phone # in Land Pride literature either...FWIW

Interesting point. The one Landpride item I own HAS had a problem - and I have had to go through the dealer - who goes through the Landpride rep - who is some anonymous guy who only comes around like once a month - and after two months of waiting I hear, basically, that Landpride isn't going to fix my implement in any competent way, and they think I should just use it bent and not worry about it. For lack of any options, I think I will, but I also think it will be the last Landpride implement I ever buy.

That's 2 strikes against landpride. (slow to respond and gave the wrong answer)

I don't have a clue how woods handles issues like that. None of my woods equipment has had any issues. Well, they said the BB600 blades were recalled and gave me new ones. he he he, I got the notice the day I was going to order new ones. Other than that, the stuff just works.

A little info...

I sent LP a question via e-mail on Monday. No answer or acknowledgement yet. That's a full week..

I believe that LP makes quality implements, but, I dislike doing business this way...Maybe I'm just old fashioned.

I purchased a Woods PRD 7200 this spring for $2K tax included. Dealer cost was $1820 so he only made a little over $50 on the unit. My previous unit was a 60" LandPride that I owned for 14 years. Tough little unit but lighter made than the Woods. Never replaced a bearing in 14 years. Excellent quality.

I went with the PRD over the Heritage because of the cast iron sheaves, heavier deck, 60 HP rated gear box, and 5/8" rolled bar steel that protects the deck. To me it was worth the extra money over the Heritage model.

If you have lots of trees I would stick with the ZTR and not get a RFM. Mine works well because I have very few obsticals eventhough my ground is very hilly and some parts is quite rough. I mow around 4 to 5 acres a week with a 28 HP 1720 NH.
