I am trying to decide if I should buy a rake for the current project, but wonder if I will ever use it again. Can you guys help out?

Jim, I've got a 6' King Kutter rake and it's one of my favorite implements. Obviously, it's great for smoothing an area in prep for lawn etc. I've also used it for light grading on a dirt road.

I guess the thing I like so much about it is it produces a very nice surface without much effort on your part. The box blade is good for roughing in the grade, but it takes a lot of skill and concentration to achieve perfection. I still use the box blade for the rough work, but I can stop well short of perfection and change to the rake. A few passes with the rake and the minor imperfections of the box blade are gone, leaving the area looking just great. The tine marks also provide a nice sanctuary for grass seed if you don't have a seeder of some sort /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Here's a thread that might help "<A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.tractorbynet.com/cgi-bin/compact/showflat.pl?Cat=&Board=implement&Number=105388&page=&view=&sb=&o=&vc=1>landscape/york rake</A>".

My 6' Leinbach rake works great for cleaning the horse corrals. Gathers up the manure and wasted hay into winrows, which I can pick up in the FEL. The rake gathers the loose material without digging too deep into the soil, so I am not hauling away the base material each time we clean. When I try to do the same thing by back-blading with the FEL or using my back blade, it is a lot more work and I have trouble keeping from digging too deep.

With the guide wheels on, it also works well for leveling and smoothing a driveway or riding arena.

Thanks for all the great excuses, er I mean, ah, uses, for the rake. I'm heading out to look at them today.

I use my Land Pride rake to clean up below Willow trees in the Spring. Usually have quite a tree mess after Winter and the rake really helps with this job. Guide wheels are a must to protect your grass.

Jim...

Not sure what your current project is...you didn't say. Whatever the case may be, rakes are relatively inexpensive and you'll likely be using it more times than you currently think. Here's a picture of my Frontier LR1172 medium duty rake.

And here's a picture of the LR1172 with optional grader blade in the drop down position. Frontier, btw, is made for John Deere by Woods. This product is rugged and durable....it costs a bit more than light duty rakes but will handle tougher jobs.

Add a two hundred pound concrete weight to it and it grooves the ice buildup on driveway, for traction.

THANKS to all for the ideas and input. I really did go out Friday and tried to purchase a rake, but Fleet Farm and Tractor Supply were both out of them. So I limped along with just the FEL, dumping and back dragging to get my dirt graded properly around the new pole shed, and managed to get respectable results. I seeded it on Tuesday and there was fine grass growing already on Saturday. Its been a battle to keep it moist 'cause the weather has been very hot. But its done. Now, you've given me plenty of reasons for getting the rake anyway, so I will be shopping carefully. I especially like the description of the First Choice unit I found somewhere here, which can pivot up and down side-to-side to follow the terrain. It will help when the First Choice website has some content.
